{"id":298213,"date":"2026-02-14T19:18:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T19:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/298213\/"},"modified":"2026-02-14T19:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T19:18:09","slug":"man-with-a-keen-interest-in-motorsports-jailed-for-buying-bmw-with-limerick-mans-card","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/298213\/","title":{"rendered":"Man with &#8216;a keen interest in motorsports&#8217; jailed for buying BMW with Limerick man&#8217;s card"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A YOUNG MAN \u201cwith a keen interest in motor sports\u201d has been imprisoned for buying a BMW with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick<\/a> property developer\u2019s credit card.<\/p>\n<p>Gareth Delaney, 25, with a home address at Hyde Court, the Golf Links Road, Roscommon, bought a X5 BMW SUV for \u20ac27,000 from Murray\u2019s autos in Nenagh, Tipperary on January 8, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Barrister Donal Cronin, defending, told Limerick Circuit Court that \u201cthere was a lack of sophistication\u201d in the enterprise &#8211; and that Mr Delaney used his own name and address when making the purchase with the credit card.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/politics\/2012331\/concern-for-limerick-mayor-john-moran-as-he-falls-ill-five-hours-into-seven-hour-meeting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Concern for Limerick mayor John Moran as he falls ill five hours into seven-hour meeting<\/a><\/p>\n<p>State Barrister John O\u2019Sullivan detailed that Mr Delaney spent tens of thousands of euro in the space of a month &#8211; and made purchases at various car dealerships in Dublin, Longford and Nenagh.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Cronin said in mitigation that Mr Delaney has ADHD and was off his medication at the time of the offences, and in this way, his \u201clife became chaotic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The barrister detailed that upon detection Mr Delaney cooperated fully with garda\u00ed, and that the man is \u201cashamed and remorseful\u201d for his actions.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that the man was \u201cunder financial pressure at the time\u201d of the offences, and that his behaviour was \u201creally out of character\u201d for him. He stated that Mr Delaney has paid back the \u20ac30,000 for the thefts, and asked the judge to consider his previous good record.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Cronin further added that Mr Delaney is employed as a lorry driver and plays hand ball to a high level in his local club. <br \/>Judge Colin Daly was told that the man never came to the attention of the garda\u00ed prior to the thefts &#8211; bar two road traffic offences.<\/p>\n<p>The judge said that Mr Delaney is an intelligent young man, and \u201cknew what he was doing was wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Daly sentenced the man to two and a half years\u2019 imprisonment.
