{"id":298444,"date":"2026-02-14T22:47:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T22:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/298444\/"},"modified":"2026-02-14T22:47:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T22:47:11","slug":"beth-carton-and-niamh-rockett-fire-waterford-to-win-over-cork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/298444\/","title":{"rendered":"Beth Carton and Niamh Rockett fire Waterford to win over Cork"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">\n             Waterford 1-12 Cork 0-9\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cork got the defence of their Centra National Camogie League Division 1A title off to a losing start at Azzurri Walsh Park on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">With only four of the team that started the All-Ireland final last August playing it was a very much a new look Cork side and it was no great surprise to see an experienced Waterford outfit get the better of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But credit to Cork they battled to the end with the likes of Libby Coppinger, Ashling Thompson, Millie Condon and Niamh McNabola the pick of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cork now face Antrim next weekend, a game they will be expected to pick up their first win in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Beth Carton opened the scoring for the home side, with Niamh McNabola replying for Cork.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4969205_5_articleinline_2887018-YT_DSC9348.jpg\" alt=\"Niamh McNabola of Cork in action on Saturday. Picture: INPHO\/James Lawlor<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another from Carton put Waterford back in front, as they led by 0-2 to 0-1 after five minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A free from Niamh Rockett increased Waterford\u2019s lead as she pointed from long distance, using the wind at their backs to her full advantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Abby Flynn increased their lead and with 11 minutes gone Bevan Bowdren added another to see Waterford in front by 0-5 to 0-1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In the absence of Cork\u2019s regular free takers Keeva McCarthy took over the duties and she pointed to add her side\u2019s second score.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Flynn combined with Carton for the latter to increase Waterford\u2019s lead as the home side were making the most of their chances, to lead by 0-6 to 0-2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Carton struck another as she was causing the Cork defenced all sorts of problems and she was on target again, to make it 0-8 to 0-2 after 23 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">McCarty pulled a point back from a free, after 27 minutes, which was the last score of the half as Waterford led by 0-8 to 0-3 at the break.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">McNabola got the first score of the second half as Cork were now playing with the strong wind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another free from McCarthy has the Waterford lead down to three, with 35 minutes played \u2013 0-8 to 0-5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A minute later and Waterford found the back of the net.
