<\/p>\nMegan Markle’s father Thomas is progressing well in his rehabilitation following the amputation of his left leg below the knee, reaching a significant milestone on Friday by attending a Valentine’s Day celebration at his recovery facility in the Philippines.<\/p>\n
The 81-year-old former Hollywood lighting director was able to swap his hospital gown for regular clothing \u2014 jeans and a blue shirt \u2014 for the first time since his surgery.<\/p>\n
Mr Markle described the celebratory lunch with fellow patients and nursing staff as “great fun”, with the occasion featuring red roses and chocolates.<\/p>\n
“I’m being very well taken care of and I am grateful for all the wonderful care I am getting,” he said.<\/p>\n

The surgery became necessary after a massive blood clot in his left thigh blocked circulation to his foot, leaving doctors with no choice but to remove the lower portion of his leg to preserve his life.<\/p>\n
Mr Markle told the Mail on Sunday he is gradually coming to terms with his new situation.<\/p>\n
“I am adjusting slowly and doing a lot of physiotherapy. I am feeling very happy and am making good progress. I have a long way to go but am getting used to my new circumstances,” he said.<\/p>\n
He is currently undertaking physiotherapy sessions each day and remains optimistic about eventually being fitted with a prosthetic limb.<\/p>\n
The relationship between Mr Markle and his daughter Meghan broke down on the eve of her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. The pair have remained estranged ever since.<\/p>\n
Following his amputation in December, Meghan sent her father a letter after several attempts to reach him, but he has heard nothing from her since.<\/p>\n

Mr Markle has never had the opportunity to meet his son-in-law or his two grandchildren, six-year-old Archie and four-year-old Lilibet.<\/p>\n
The rift began when Mr Markle was unable to attend the royal wedding after suffering two heart attacks in the days leading up to the ceremony.<\/p>\n
Mr Markle’s health has been troubled for several years. The twin cardiac episodes that prevented him from walking his daughter down the aisle were followed by a stroke in 2022, adding to his medical challenges.<\/p>\n
Despite these setbacks, the retired lighting director remains focused on his recovery and has expressed gratitude for the support he has received from well-wishers around the globe.<\/p>\n

Earlier in his rehabilitation, Mr Markle celebrated being able to sit on the edge of his bed and stand on his remaining leg with assistance from medical staff and a walking frame\u2014an achievement he described as “a wonderful Christmas present”.<\/p>\n
