Pic: Brian McEvoy<\/p>\n<p>The couple welcomed a Ukrainian refugee and her four dogs into their Maynooth home when war broke out in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>They even took it one step further, giving up their own bedroom so that the lady could have an en-suite. All while <a href=\"https:\/\/evoke.ie\/2026\/01\/29\/entertainment\/celebrity\/dearbhla-mescal-book\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/evoke.ie\/2026\/01\/29\/entertainment\/celebrity\/dearbhla-mescal-book\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dearbhla <\/a>was dealing with cancer symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>The author of Finding Joy also volunteered in a shop during that time to provide support to other refugees, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/life\/health-wellbeing\/dearbhla-mescal-i-was-at-the-centre-court-in-wimbledon-one-sunday-it-was-my-first-outing-as-pauls-plus-one-and-the-following-sunday-i-was-in-an-oncology-ward\/a1903858443.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Irish Independent. <\/a>The mum-of-three opened up about her cancer battle with the outlet. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/GettyImages-1248108286.jpg\" alt=\"Dearbhla Mescal and Paul Mescal at the 95th Annual Academy Awards held at Ovation Hollywood on March 12, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. Pic: Michael Buckner\/Variety via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Dearbhla recalled how her doctor made every effort to get her to the Oscars in Los Angeles in 2023 as Paul&#8217;s date, despite being very ill at the time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Sometimes I look at pictures of me at the Oscars, and I was very, very sick,&#8217; she confessed. Pic: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I remember saying to my doctor, Patrick Hayden, &#8220;I know I\u2019m supposed to be going in to have my treatment, but we\u2019ve got this Oscar thing going on&#8221;.
