{"id":300208,"date":"2026-02-16T01:56:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T01:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/300208\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T01:56:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T01:56:12","slug":"clare-farmer-arrested-in-limerick-following-his-wifes-birthday-party-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/300208\/","title":{"rendered":"Clare farmer arrested in Limerick following his wife\u2019s birthday party celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A FARMER was arrested in Limerick city centre after he had \u201cway too much to drink\u201d at his wife\u2019s birthday party, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/463\/crime-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">court<\/a> has heard.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Moroney, aged 32, with an address at Doolin Road, Lisdoonvarna, County Clare, pleaded guilty to resisting garda\u00ed and two other charges under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994.<\/p>\n<p>At Limerick District Court, prosecuting garda Sergeant Denis Waters told the court that the incident in question took place on Denmark Street in Limerick city on September 14, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>READ ALSO |\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/2012432\/word-gets-around-in-a-small-village-limerick-man-pressured-to-store-drugs-in-his-attic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">&#8216;Word gets around in a small village&#8217;: Limerick man pressured to store drugs in his attic<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At approximately midnight, An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na were contacted by staff at a local premises who reported a \u201chighly intoxicated\u201d male causing a disturbance.<\/p>\n<p>When garda\u00ed arrived at the scene, Mr Moroney was \u201cshouting, roaring and swinging his arms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sgt Waters added that he was aggressive towards garda\u00ed and subsequently resisted arrest.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard the accused was pushing and kicking as garda\u00ed attempted to get him into their vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>This continued for several minutes and it took several attempts, despite a number of garda\u00ed being in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>However, no one was injured in the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Moroney has seven previous convictions, all for road traffic offences.<\/p>\n<p>READ ALSO |\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/crime-and-courts\/2012594\/limerick-garda-feared-for-his-safety-when-caught-up-in-traveller-fight-that-involved-up-to-50-people.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick garda feared for his safety when caught up in traveller fight that involved up to 50 people<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Solicitor P\u00e1raic Nesbitt, representing the accused, said his client was \u201cextremely apologetic\u201d about his behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that it was Mr Moroney\u2019s wife\u2019s birthday and that he had had \u201cway too much to drink\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, Judge Patricia Harney interjected to say that that was \u201csome present for her\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Nesbitt went on to explain that the incident was \u201cvery out of character\u201d for the man, who works as a farmer and has two children.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Harney gave the accused credit for his early plea of guilty and acknowledged that he had \u201cnever done anything like this before\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She said that the charge of resisting garda\u00ed under Section 19 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994 was the \u201cmost serious\u201d of the offences.<\/p>\n<p>She imposed a fine of \u20ac400 and gave him four months to pay.
