{"id":303681,"date":"2026-02-18T04:36:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T04:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/303681\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T04:36:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T04:36:08","slug":"beauty-product-marketed-as-irish-made-but-shipped-from-china-breached-advertising-rules-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/303681\/","title":{"rendered":"Beauty product marketed as \u2018Irish made\u2019 but shipped from China breached advertising rules \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A product which was advertised on social media as \u201cIrish made\u201d, but was shipped from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\/\">China<\/a>, is among a number of adverts found to be in breach of standards by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/advertising-standards-authority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/advertising-standards-authority\/\">Advertising Standards Authority<\/a> (ASA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest complaints bulletin \u2013 published on Tuesday by the ASA and the agency\u2019s independent complaints council \u2013 upheld 15 complaints in full.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two complaints were made against a company called Glaze Aura regarding a product marketed as \u201cIrish-made\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The complainants considered the social media advertising as misleading because, after placing an order, they noted that the product was shipped from China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A second complaint was made regarding the product\u2019s ingredients, as the product name on the label was \u201cWoodsleep Tallow Honey Balm\u201d, but the list of product ingredients on the label did not include any of those listed in the advertising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council upheld both complaints regarding the product. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Glaze Aura said the reference to the product being \u201cIrish-made\u201d was included in error during the early stages of setting up its product page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company said it had only been online for a short period and was removed as soon as they realised it could be misleading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It confirmed that the product was not manufactured in Ireland and \u201capologised sincerely for the mistake and for any confusion caused\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A complaint was also upheld against the VHI, the health insurer, as an advertisement on its website regarding cancer care featured phrases such as \u201ccomplete support when you need it\u201d and \u201cwith you every step of the way\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ad said \u201call your oncology treatment &#8230; will be fully covered by your VHI plan*\u201d but the asterisk below the advert read: \u201c*Benefits vary by plan. You can check those covered on your plan in your Table of Benefits in MyVhi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The complainant found the advertisement to be misleading as they considered the wording suggested that all cancer treatments, including their own, would be covered under a plan offered by VHI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The insurer expressed \u201cregret for any confusion experienced by the complainant\u201d but stated they did not believe the webpage breached the ASA Code. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A complaint was also upheld against TonyBet for a gambling advertisement on video sharing website YouTube which depicted a man using his phone while sitting on the toilet, with the wording: \u201cOnly 3 per cent of people can do this. Make money while sitting on the toilet\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The complainant said the advertisement claimed that gambling was \u201ceasy and was playing down the dangers of gambling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">TonyBet said it took \u201cimmediate action\u201d after reviewing the complaint and that it \u201curgently discontinued non-compliant advertisements with immediate effect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A separate complaint was upheld against TonyBet for an advertisement on YouTube which depicted a woman holding a baby and included text that said \u201cit\u2019s hard to pay my rent and take care of my babies\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The woman was later depicted in the video with her thumb up and a text that stated \u201cbut I made $8,500 last month\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One complaint considered that the advertisement had depicted gambling as financially beneficial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The second complaint considered that the advertisement created the dangerous impression that gambling could resolve personal or financial difficulties and had targeted vulnerable individuals and perpetuated dangerous stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">TonyBet said the advertisement launch was not a deliberate action of the company but, a mistake of a third party employee.
