Staff shortages at St Joseph\u2019s Hospital, Stranorlar, have resulted in a number of new beds \u2018lying empty\u2019 for almost 18 months.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Donegal Daily had been informed that nine beds have been vacant in the newly refurbished Barnes View Ward since September 2024. This is believed to have delayed the discharges of elderly patients from the overcrowded Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH).<\/p>\n
However, the HSE confirmed this week that six beds are currently empty there and that they are actively recruiting staff to ensure they are put back into use as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese beds initially closed in September 2024 to facilitate refurbishments, and have remained vacant following these works, due to staffing levels,\u201d a spokesperson told Donegal Daily.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe HSE Human Resources Department is actively recruiting to fill the posts required to support the reopening of these beds.<\/p>\n
\u201c6.3 Whole Time Equivalent (staff) are currently going through the pre-employment process, following which a start date will be agreed with the successful candidates. Panels are in place, from which approved vacancies will be filled as they arise. Staff Nurse and Multitask Attendant vacancies have been offered to panels; candidates will proceed to the pre-employment clearance process on acceptance of posts\u201d.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson concluded that the hospital remains committed to progressing recruitment as quickly as possible to support the full utilisation of bed capacity.<\/p>\n
While welcoming the recruitment drive, local Sinn Fein Councillor Dakota NicMheanman said \u2018the biggest issue\u2019 in relation to St Josephs is a lack of communication from the HSE.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the ward closed in September 2024, we were never given full clarification on the issue by the HSE,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt seems every time they finish one ward, they close another. One of the biggest issues with the\u00a0 HSE in relation to St Joseph\u2019s is communication.\u201d<\/p>\n
