A busload of schoolchildren have escaped serious injury in a crash in Co Armagh.<\/p>\n
They were making their way home from St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook when the incident happened.<\/p>\n
SDLP MLA Justin McNulty said up to 40 children were on the bus on the Tullyah Road around 3.30pm.<\/p>\n
It is a side road off the main Newry to Newtownhamilton Road near the village of Belleeks.<\/p>\n
It’s understood the children were heading home to the village of Whitecross.<\/p>\n
Principal of St Paul’s High School D\u00e1ith\u00ed Murray had contacted parents and had confirmed that the children involved were safe and had been collected, according to the BBC.<\/p>\n
Mr McNulty said his thoughts were with everyone involved in what must have been a “hugely traumatic incident”.<\/p>\n
He said he was thankful that the children had apparently been able to walk away with only minor injuries.<\/p>\n
A number of ambulances were sent to the scene.<\/p>\n
Mr McNulty said he had little doubt that but for the “grace of god” it could have been a much different story.<\/p>\n
Police have asked the public to avoid the area and said an update would be provided in due course.<\/p>\n
Pictures from the scene showed the bus had tipped into a ditch at an angle of 45 degrees.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it had sent significant resources to the incident.<\/p>\n
“The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended a significant incident, involving a bus, on Tullyah Road today.<\/p>\n
“The call was received at 3.38pm and NIAS despatched five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, one officer and an ambulance doctor to the incident.<\/p>\n
