{"id":304519,"date":"2026-02-18T16:27:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T16:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/304519\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T16:27:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T16:27:10","slug":"triple-lock-on-pensions-is-open-to-debate-says-nigel-farage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/304519\/","title":{"rendered":"Triple lock on pensions is open to debate, says Nigel Farage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Reform UK is not yet committed to keeping the triple lock on pensions if it wins power, Nigel Farage has said, despite the party\u2019s new Treasury spokesman, Robert Jenrick, saying he is a \u201csupporter\u201d of the policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Jenrick said he backed the triple lock, which raises pensions payments by the highest of inflation, earnings or 2.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI\u2019ve always been a supporter of the triple lock. It\u2019s incredibly important to provide dignity and security to older people on fixed incomes in the last decades of their life, particularly at a time like this where there\u2019s such challenging circumstances with the cost of living,\u201d Jenrick said at a press conference in London on Wednesday, his first as the party\u2019s Treasury spokesman.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Robert Jenrick speaking at a podium with &quot;BRITAIN NEEDS REFORM&quot; written on it.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/\/b4cc7321-c15b-4e35-90af-f061b0e7a9fa.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Jenrick making his first speech as Reform UK\u2019s Treasury spokesman<\/p>\n<p>STEFAN ROUSSEAU\/PA<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Shortly afterwards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/nigel-farage\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Farage<\/a> appeared to question whether the policy would form part of Reform\u2019s election manifesto, saying it was still \u201copen for debate\u201d. The party leader has consistently refused to commit to keeping the pensions triple lock if he got into power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">When asked whether he had changed his mind, he replied: \u201cNo, I haven\u2019t changed my mind. It\u2019s open for debate. Everything is open for debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The apparent split followed Jenrick\u2019s announcement that a future Reform government would re-impose the two-child benefit cap and end mental health payments for people who did not have a clinical diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Farage had previously supported scrapping the two-child benefit cap but said he had changed his mind after he was accused of being a socialist. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Jenrick said the party would oversee a clampdown on the welfare system to \u201cdefuse the benefits bomb set to bankrupt Britain\u201d. He also announced that only British nationals would be able to claim benefits, while pledging to end \u201cabuse\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/rachel-reeves-chancellor-motability-scheme-s5w5hwtgw?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqdmazvXVlWR_oRp3dEcxQEMEk6SvDGesrMU2Z6PxHccnqB1h8HArBPBTQyyDQQ%3D&amp;gaa_ts=6995cb00&amp;gaa_sig=kF6SBLlFm4Q2_paqZAJBo66syluO_5VBkg9hsh8jsmzspbIb95aRkrXRwciu025ovYAKkY5cS7hqrN-fKXcJcA%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Motability scheme<\/a>, which allows people with personal independence payments (Pip) to use their money to buy new cars to make it easier for them to find work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Jenrick said he was determined to reintroduce \u201cfiscal discipline\u201d to the system. He said: \u201cOur benefits system is broken. That is not fair and it is not right. It\u2019s an economic and a moral disaster. That\u2019s why I commit to you today, if we win the next election, Reform will defuse the benefits bomb set to bankrupt Britain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Department for Work and Pensions data showed 91,211 eligible Pip claims where the \u201cmain disabling condition\u201d recorded was attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or attention deficit disorder in October 2025, the most recent figures available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">It was the highest figure recorded for the conditions since at least January 2019 and more than three times the 27,852 claims recorded in March 2020, when the first Covid-19 pandemic lockdown was announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Jenrick also pledged to reform the Office for Budget Responsibility rather than abolish it, and said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/reform-equality-act-suella-braverman-nigel-farage-reform-v3fpscshh?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqfIuCzVsG4ODhfXNWXnqlJByiN3vcUZ8Q6fUCoxccH7Ht6QPrF9Vx3x17BdPnE%3D&amp;gaa_ts=6995ca1c&amp;gaa_sig=eiHDgI38noDg82sOY99CE8wKRSguOYA-ICRP1LYUTh9B65QY6ne6V5r_-1m5N8olNTzgucd2kSiQfRGfWfhj2A%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Bank of England would remain independent<\/a> if he were in No 11.<\/p>\n<p>Reform makes pledges on the independence of the Office for Budget Responsibility and the Bank of England<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He said that taxes were too high and would be brought down if there was the fiscal \u201cheadroom\u201d to do so. That means fixing the absurd marginal tax rates that many people face in our country today, so we do intend to review the tax code in a programme not seen since the landmark reforms of Nigel Lawson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWe also understand that we can\u2019t make tax cuts while running a huge deficit in the vain hope that the Laffer curve [a concept by the economist Arthur Laffer suggesting there is an optimal tax rate that can maximise government revenue] alone will do the hard work for us. That is why Nigel drew a line under the previous tax and spending commitments Reform had made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He added: \u201cWe will never make promises we can\u2019t keep to the British people, so we\u2019ll only cut taxes when we have generated the fiscal headroom necessary to make those tax cuts sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/nigel-farage-news-reform-uk-dfxsxnkhp?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqf7kuRH5h3ert8ptTwL1q3uQ-bqp_VOPT0b-duTYLm8X_USCgBVX-lYN8_WLzw%3D&amp;gaa_ts=6995ca1c&amp;gaa_sig=KSvddkGUTfxiT0Fqugr4qfFw9vDI4NevX8VAlbrJpaVACQsL_gX0zN5pzHuHS_vDMdap5ryALHFannbhGbotow%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reform UK\u2019s \u2018shadow cabinet\u2019: competent and capable or Tory 2.0?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The party would also cut red tape and protect key national industries, including steel-making and car manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Jenrick warned that China would undercut industries in Britain and cause job losses. He said: \u201cFree trade with our friends and allies is advantageous, but we must respond robustly when our rivals consistently cheat the system and leverage dependencies to our disadvantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cReform do not believe in picking winners, but, yes, we do believe in an industrial strategy to protect our strategic industries like steel, defence and car-making because unless we change course now, we will trade a car made in Sunderland for a car made in Shenzhen, the Chinese building their middle class on the backs of ours. And Reform will never allow that to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Sir Keir Starmer, the prime minister, said Reform\u2019s pledge to bring back the two-child benefit cap showed a \u201ctotal disregard for the lives of young people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He said: \u201cThis is shameful from Reform, a total disregard for the lives of young people. I hope that they absolutely never get to be in power because this is an indication of the sort of Britain that they want to see, a Britain which plumbs its children back into poverty.
