{"id":304685,"date":"2026-02-18T18:34:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T18:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/304685\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T18:34:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T18:34:07","slug":"where-did-sister-cities-parks-amor-statue-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/304685\/","title":{"rendered":"Where did Sister Cities Park&#8217;s &#8216;AMOR&#8217; statue go?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Those around Logan Circle might notice something missing today: Robert Indiana\u2019s bright red <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.associationforpublicart.org\/artwork\/amor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AMOR<\/a> sculpture. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">On Wednesday morning, Philadelphia officials removed the artwork \u2014 a companion piece to Indiana\u2019s <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/entertainment\/arts\/love-sculpture-robert-indiana-park-philadelphia-pictures-20180522.html-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">iconic LOVE sculpture<\/a> at nearby John F. Kennedy Plaza \u2014 from its perch at Sister Cities Park on 18th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway for conservation and restoration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Creative Philadelphia, the city\u2019s arts office, said AMOR is scheduled to return on May 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cOver the years, the paint on AMOR has naturally faded due to exposure to UV rays and weather,\u201d said Marguerite Anglin, Creative Philadelphia\u2019s public art director. \u201cWe are excited to give the sculpture a full restoration treatment, and look forward to its return back to Sister Cities Park in time for the city\u2019s largest celebrations of America\u2019s 250th.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The removal was overseen by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and Heritage Conservation Collective. The sculpture was transported to Fine Finishes Painting Studio in Peekskill, N.Y., where conservators approved by the Robert Indiana Foundation will strip and repaint it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Indiana created AMOR in 1998 \u201cin response to the changing demographics of the U.S. and his desire to speak to his fellow citizens,\u201d <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.associationforpublicart.org\/artwork\/amor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to the Association for Public Art<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">AMOR, meaning  love  in Spanish and Latin, came to Philadelphia in 2015 to mark Pope Francis\u2019 visit, thanks to the aPA and the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/philadelphia-art-museum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Museum of Art<\/a>. On loan from the New York-based Morgan Art Foundation, it was displayed at the top of the museum steps, where it <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/news\/pope\/20150917_LOVE_sculpture_to_get_an_affectionate_companion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">overlooked the papal Mass held on the Parkway<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In 2016, it was permanently installed at Sister Cities Park with funding and support from the city, PMA, aPA, the Morgan Art Foundation, and Edith R.
