{"id":304795,"date":"2026-02-18T20:06:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T20:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/304795\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T20:06:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T20:06:09","slug":"christine-lagarde-to-leave-ecb-before-the-end-of-her-eight-year-term-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/304795\/","title":{"rendered":"Christine Lagarde to leave ECB before the end of her eight-year term \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christine-lagarde\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christine-lagarde\/\">Christine Lagarde<\/a> is expected to leave the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank-ecb\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank-ecb\/\">European Central Bank<\/a> (ECB) before her eight-year term as president expires in October 2027, according to a person familiar with her thinking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Europe\u2019s top central banker, who joined the Frankfurt-based ECB in November 2019 from the IMF, wants to exit before the French presidential election in April next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the person with knowledge of her thinking, Lagarde wants to enable outgoing French president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emmanuel-macron\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emmanuel-macron\/\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> and German chancellor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/friedrich-merz\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/friedrich-merz\/\">Friedrich Merz<\/a> to find a new head for one of the EU\u2019s most important institutions. It is not clear when Lagarde\u2019s departure will take place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPresident Lagarde is totally focused on her mission and has not taken any decision regarding the end of her term,\u201d the ECB said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">European economists polled by the FT in December regarded Spain\u2019s former central bank governor Pablo Hern\u00e1ndez de Cos and his Dutch counterpart Klaas Knot as top picks to become the next president of the euro zone central bank. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">ECB executive board member Isabel Schnabel has said she is interested in the job, and people briefed on Bundesbank president Joachim Nagel\u2019s thinking said he was also keen on the role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">People briefed on discussions in Paris have told the FT that Macron \u2013 who cannot run for a third term as French president \u2013 has for months wanted a say in choosing Lagarde\u2019s successor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lagarde\u2019s decision follows the move by French central bank governor Fran\u00e7ois Villeroy de Galhau, who announced this month that he would step down in June, 18 months ahead of the end of his term. Although Villeroy de Galhau said he had decided to leave to join a charity, critics have said Macron had cleared the way for him to be able to make the new pick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/10\/28\/christine-lagarde-i-see-my-duty-as-being-to-the-europeans-and-not-to-the-financial-experts\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christine Lagarde interview from 2013: \u2018I see my duty as being to the Europeans and not to the financial experts\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The French presidential election in April next year will be crucial for the euro zone\u2019s second-largest economy and the wider EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/marine-le-pen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/marine-le-pen\/\">Marine Le Pen<\/a>, leader of the far-right Rassemblement National (RN), is consistently polling ahead of rivals, putting her in pole position to make the run-off between two candidates in the final presidential ballot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While Le Pen may be disqualified from running as the RN candidate after being convicted last year of embezzling European Parliament funds, she said her prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Jordan Bardella would step in in these circumstances. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Both Le Pen, who is appealing her conviction, and Bardella are eurosceptics, which could complicate relations with European institutions such as the ECB.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Macron has also moved to bulletproof other key posts ahead of 2027, recently naming a close ally to the head of the national auditor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lagarde\u2019s time at the ECB\u2019s helm has been shaped by a series of crises, including the Covid-19 pandemic, Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and a trade conflict with the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under her watch, euro zone inflation surged to close to 11 per cent in late 2022, as energy prices shot up in the wake of Russia\u2019s attack on its neighbour and global supply chains suffered pandemic-related bottlenecks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ECB raised interest rates from minus 0.5 per cent to 4 per cent in little more than a year. From mid-2024, the central bank lowered borrowing costs to 2 per cent as inflation fell back to the ECB\u2019s 2 per cent medium-term target.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lagarde\u2019s appointment as ECB president came after Macron and then German chancellor Angela Merkel struck a surprise deal in 2019. They agreed that Lagarde take over the ECB and then German defence minister Ursula von der Leyen become European Commission president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lagarde told Bloomberg TV last month that she accepted the ECB job under the impression that she would serve a five-year term, in comments seen by observers as potential preparation for an early exit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She recalled how she told Macron after agreeing to the role of ECB president: \u201cI\u2019ll be in Frankfurt for five years.
