It\u2019s not hard to find a David Hockney exhibition in London. Last year, the\u00a0octogenarian had shows at the Royal Drawing School and Lightroom<\/a>, the year before that you could find special displays\u00a0of his work at the National Gallery<\/a> and the National Portrait Gallery<\/a>, and there\u2019s another one coming to the Serpentine next month<\/a>. However, Hockney exhibitions anywhere else in the UK are much fewer and farther between. So, it\u2019s a pretty big deal that\u00a0a Hockney\u00a0piece\u00a0will be landing at one of Britain\u2019s best regional galleries later this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

David Hockney has created a brand new window\u00a0installation for Margate\u2019s<\/a> Turner Contemporary. The piece is based on an iPad painting the artist created in 2020, depicting a sunrise in Normandy as part of a huge body of work responding to the changing seasons, weather and light. It\u2019ll be the first time that a major work by Hockney is on display in the seaside town and a rare opportunity to see a piece by the artist outside of London.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Created for the gallery\u2019s 15th anniversary, the\u00a0piece titled \u2018Sunley Window\u2019 will take up the entirety of the 22-by-32-foot, floor-to-ceiling window in the building\u2019s Sunley Gallery, which looks out\u00a0towards the\u00a0North Sea. The idea is that, at night, it\u2019ll be illuminated and become \u2018a point of light on the seafront\u2019. You\u2019ll be able to\u00a0admire it whether inside the gallery or outside taking a stroll on the promenade.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The work has extra\u00a0significance\u00a0due to the fact that Hockney has\u00a0been a life-long admirer of JMW Turner, the gallery\u2019s namesake, and his interpretations of light, atmosphere and landscape. Back in 2007, Hockney even curated an\u00a0exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s watercolours at the Tate Britain<\/p>\n

David Hockney: Sunley Window 2026\u00a0will be on at the Turner Contemporary in Margate from April 1 to November 1. It\u2019ll coincide with another landmark\u00a0Hockney show at\u00a0London\u2019s\u00a0Serpentine gallery<\/a>, which will display his monumental digital artwork\u00a0A Year in Normandie,\u00a0alongside ten new stills lifes and portraits.\u00a0<\/p>\n
