We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Beloved author and illustrator Charlie Mackesy will be the focus of a new exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery. <\/p>\n<p>Mackesy, an illustrator for Oxford University Press, is best known for his wholesome and whimsical children\u2019s book The Boy, the Fox, the Mole and the Horse, which was published in 2019 and rapidly went on to become a literary sensation worldwide. <\/p>\n<p>A new exhibition will bring together early sketches, unpublished studies, and original works from across Mackesy\u2019s near 50-year-long career. <\/p>\n<p>The gently told story of a young boy\u2019s encounter with new animal friends, The Boy, the Fox, the Mole and the Horse went on to sell over 10 million copies and has been translated into more than 50 languages. <\/p>\n<p>Its message of love, friendship and self-worth found visual form in Mackesy\u2019s winsome illustrations \u2013 the boy and animals brought to life by his loose and expressive pen. <\/p>\n<p>In 2023, a BBC screen adaptation of the book, featuring the voices of Jude Coward Nicoll, Tom Hollander, Idris Elba, and Gabriel Bryne, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/matthew-freud-awards-jj-abrams-british-fleabag-b2299420.html\">won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Curated by art historian and author Kate Bryan, the forthcoming exhibition will invite visitors to make their own drawings in response to those on display, emphasising the health and wellbeing benefits of art. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Charlie-Mackesy-Author-Image_Credit-Charlie-Gray.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Charlie Mackesy started his career as a cartoonist for \u2018The Spectator\u2019 and an illustrator for Oxford University Press\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Mackesy started his career as a cartoonist for \u2018The Spectator\u2019 and an illustrator for Oxford University Press (Charlie Gray)<\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown that engaging in creativity can reduce depression, improve immunity and delay aging, with randomised trials on the mental health benefits of the arts concluding that regular singing, dancing, reading, crafts, and cultural pursuits reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress for people of all ages. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve loved Dulwich Picture Gallery ever since I biked past it when I was 19 and came in to have a look,\u201d said Mackesy, who lives local to the art institute. \u201cIt felt very special; kind but serious and beautiful. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never dreamt that one day I\u2019d be exhibiting my work at the Gallery. What a privilege. I really hope you enjoy visiting the exhibition and that it inspires you.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the resonance of Mackesy\u2019s work, Bryan, the curator, said: \u201cCharlie Mackesy is an astonishingly rare breed of artist.
