Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a>, which this week declared it would not attend St Patrick\u2019s Day<\/a> events in the White House, was not invited by the Trump administration<\/a>, the US<\/a> embassy has said.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued to The Irish Times in response to questions, the US ambassador to Ireland Edward Walsh said that \u201cno members of Sinn F\u00e9in have been invited to the White House, and none are expected to be invited\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnnouncing a boycott of an event for which invitations have neither been extended nor finalised is premature,\u201d said the ambassador.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, in a statement, the Sinn F\u00e9in leader Mary Lou McDonald<\/a> said that no Sinn F\u00e9in representatives would attend the White House, citing the situation in Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important that the eyes of the international community remain focused on what is happening in Palestine<\/a> and it is important that Sinn F\u00e9in uses its voice to demand that international law is upheld and peace and justice prevail,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Sinn F\u00e9in leader did not attend last year, the first year of president Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s second term. However, Sinn F\u00e9in said that the party was operating on the basis that she would be invited again.<\/p>\n

A spokesman said: \u201cInvites are usually made in the week before the St Patrick\u2019s Day event, so the decision not to attend pre-empted any invite being made.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ambassador\u2019s statement says that there is strong demand for invitations to the Trump White House.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemand to participate this year is the strongest we have ever seen, underscoring the depth and vitality of the US\u2013Ireland partnership,\u201d the statement said. <\/p>\n

\u201cMany leaders, business figures, and community representatives are eager to be part of that engagement and to strengthen the bonds between our nations, and those are the people who will be there. <\/p>\n
