{"id":310171,"date":"2026-02-21T17:21:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T17:21:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/310171\/"},"modified":"2026-02-21T17:21:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T17:21:15","slug":"its-an-honour-to-come-home-says-emotional-jessie-buckley-as-she-picks-up-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/310171\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s an honour to come home, says emotional Jessie Buckley as she picks up award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An emotional Jessie Buckley said the past year had been a \u201croller-coaster\u201d as she was named the winner in the lead actress in a film category at the Irish Film and Television Academy Awards (Iftas) on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>She received the award for her portrayal of William Shakespeare\u2019s wife in Hamnet, for which she has also been nominated for an Oscar and a Bafta.<\/p>\n<p>Accepting the award, she said: \u201cIt\u2019s really such an honour to come home and share this with you, mostly because growing up in Ireland, the very nature of storytelling, of music, of art, is a way of life, it is a way of community\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She also thanked her co-star, Paul Mescal, who plays the Bard, saying: \u201cI know everybody\u2019s sick of me saying how much I love him. HANDOUT\"\/>Jessie Buckley won the award for lead actress (Andres Poveda\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>He was named best supporting actor in a film for Hamnet but was not at the ceremony to collect his prize.<\/p>\n<p>Hamnet also won the international film and film script awards.<\/p>\n<p>Channel 4 drama Trespasses was another big winner, picking up prizes for drama script, hair &amp; makeup and lead actress in a drama.<\/p>\n<p>Set in 1970s Northern Ireland, Lola Petticrew plays a young Catholic teacher, Cushla, who falls for a married Protestant man.<\/p>\n<p>Collecting her award, Petticrew dedicated it to her late uncle Gerard who was her \u201cbiggest fan\u201d, a Dublin city dry cleaner who helped her out of \u201ca bit of a pickle\u201d and \u201cthe kids of West Belfast\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771694475_987_it-s-an-honour-to-come-home-says-emotional-jessie-buckley-as-she-picks-up-award.jpg\" alt=\"Lola Petticrew with an award\" data-title=\"IFTA Awards 2026\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Media\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Media\" data-credit=\"Andres Poveda\" data-usage-terms=\"PICTURE DESK USE ONLY. Photo: Andres Poveda\/PA.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI\u2019m under no illusion that a lot of the reason that I am here is because of luck\u201d, adding: \u201cThe system is not designed for kids where I\u2019m from to survive, let alone thrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne in three kids in West Belfast live in poverty. That is the legacy of war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said \u201cthey deserve so much more\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There was also an emphasis on supporting underprivileged children from the filmmakers of Christy.<\/p>\n<p>The coming-of-age film tells the story of two estranged brothers in Cork navigating the care system.<\/p>\n<p>Nominated in 14 categories, it picked up some of the night\u2019s top awards including best film, casting, editing and film director, for Brendan Canty.<\/p>\n<p>Collecting the trophy, he noted the awards were taking place on 2026 Care Day, which highlights the experiences of children\u202fand young people in care.<\/p>\n<p>He called on the government to do more to help people in the care system.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771694475_90_it-s-an-honour-to-come-home-says-emotional-jessie-buckley-as-she-picks-up-award.jpg\" alt=\"Ciaran Hinds with an award\" data-title=\"IFTA Awards 2026\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Media\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Media\" data-credit=\"Andres Poveda\" data-usage-terms=\"PICTURE DESK USE ONLY.
