{"id":310421,"date":"2026-02-21T20:58:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T20:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/310421\/"},"modified":"2026-02-21T20:58:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T20:58:08","slug":"furious-with-court-decision-trump-says-he-will-raise-us-global-tariff-rate-to-15-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/310421\/","title":{"rendered":"Furious with court decision, Trump says he will raise US global tariff rate to 15% \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">US president \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> said on Saturday he will raise a temporary tariff from 10 per cent to 15 per cent on US imports from all countries, the maximum level allowed under the law, after the \u200bUS Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2026\/02\/20\/us-supreme-court-strikes-down-trump-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2026\/02\/20\/us-supreme-court-strikes-down-trump-tariffs\/\">struck down his previous tariff programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump had immediately announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/02\/20\/us-supreme-court-rules-trump-exceeded-his-authority-by-imposing-global-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/02\/20\/us-supreme-court-rules-trump-exceeded-his-authority-by-imposing-global-tariffs\/\">10<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/02\/20\/us-supreme-court-rules-trump-exceeded-his-authority-by-imposing-global-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/02\/20\/us-supreme-court-rules-trump-exceeded-his-authority-by-imposing-global-tariffs\/\"> per cent across-the-board tariff on Friday<\/a> after the court\u2019s decision, which found the president had exceeded his authority when he imposed an array of higher rates under an economic emergency law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The new levies are grounded in a separate but untested law, known as Section 122, that \u200ballows tariffs up to 15 per cent but requires congressional approval to extend them after 150 days. No <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">US<\/a> president has previously invoked Section 122 and its use could lead to further legal \u2060challenges. Trade experts and congressional aides are sceptical the Republican-majority Congress would extend the tariffs, given polls that show growing numbers of Americans \u200cblame \u200cthe \u200bduties for higher prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a social media post on Saturday, Trump said he would use the 150-day period to work on issuing other \u201clegally permissible\u201d tariffs. The administration intends to rely \u2060on two other statutes that permit import taxes on \u200bspecific products or countries based on investigations into national security or unfair trade \u200bpractices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He wrote in a Truth Social post: \u201cI, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been \u2018ripping\u2019 \u200cthe U.S. off for decades, without retribution (until I came \u200balong!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Section 122 tariffs include exemptions for \u2060certain products, including critical minerals, metals and energy products, according to \u2060the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Wendy Cutler, a \u200bformer senior US trade official and senior vice president at the Asia Society think tank, said she was surprised Trump had not gone for the maximum Section 122 rate on Friday, but that his rapid-fire change underscored the uncertainty trading partners faced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump, who often describes tariffs as his favourite word, has attacked individual justices in personal terms and insisted he retained the power to impose tariffs as he sees fit.
