A MAN who said that a portion of the \u20ac35,000 cash found in his bedside locker was from the sale of a horse, is due to be sentenced in Limerick<\/a> Circuit Court.<\/p>\n

Thomas O\u2019Dwyer, 33, had his home address at Cathedral Court on Pennywell Street searched by the Garda Drugs Unit on April 27, 2023.<\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed found two packages of drugs – with a combined street value of \u20ac5,224 in the man\u2019s garage – as well as empty packets used for drugs.<\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed found a number of betting slips in his bedroom – alongside over \u20ac35,000 stacked in his locker.<\/p>\n

Mr O\u2019Dwyer pleaded guilty to money laundering and drug possession.<\/p>\n

Confirming the facts of the case with Detective Adrian Cahill, Barrister John O\u2019Sullivan said that Mr O\u2019Dwyer claimed that he won \u20ac9,000 of the money on bets.<\/p>\n

Mr O\u2019Dwyer told garda\u00ed in an interview that he came into possession of \u20ac10,000 from selling a horse and a harness.<\/p>\n

He further explained that the money was to go towards his wedding.<\/p>\n

Mr O\u2019Sullivan said that Mr O\u2019Dwyer could only supply limited evidence and details for the sale of the horse and harness.<\/p>\n

Mr O’Dwyer further stated that he was \u201cminding the drugs\u201d and would package it into smaller amounts when he would get calls to deliver the drugs.<\/p>\n

Detective Cahill said the vacuum packing of cash is an indicator that it came from criminality, and that he \u201cwould be willing to believe he was holding the drugs on behalf of an organised crime group\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr O\u2019Dwyer\u2019s barrister, Yvonne Quinn, said that Mr O\u2019Dwyer\u2019s involvement in criminality was as \u201ca foot soldier\u201d, which the detective agreed with. The barrister said the man has no previous convictions.<\/p>\n

In mitigation, Ms Quinn said that Mr O\u2019Dwyer \u201cexcelled at soccer but had an accident that ended his career\u201d. The barrister said that the accident resulted in the man hurting his back which led the man to cannabis use.<\/p>\n

The court heard that he previously worked at a casino for seven years as a supervisor, and has \u201cnever been in trouble before\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ms Quinn stated that Mr O\u2019Dwyer has a good family – which is made up of seven siblings, and his parents who he lives with.<\/p>\n

The man also has a finance\u00e9 and a young child.<\/p>\n

Ms Quinn implored Judge Colin Daly for leniency in his sentencing, and said that her client is \u201cvery scared of facing a custodial sentence\u201d.<\/p>\n

Judge Daly adjourned the sentencing to a later date in February.<\/p>\n
