{"id":313708,"date":"2026-02-23T22:46:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T22:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/313708\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T22:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T22:46:08","slug":"prominent-publicans-son-and-daughter-plead-guilty-to-assault-at-four-star-co-limerick-hotel-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/313708\/","title":{"rendered":"Prominent publican\u2019s son and daughter plead guilty to assault at four-star Co Limerick hotel \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A daughter and son of prominent publican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/charlie-chawke\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/charlie-chawke\/\">Charlie Chawke<\/a> pleaded guilty on Monday to assault causing harm to two men at the four-star Dunraven Arms Hotel in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/adare\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/adare\/\">Adare<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\">Co Limerick<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Alison Chawke (41) of The Beeches, Holywell, Goatstown, Dublin 14, and her brother Bill Chawke (31) of Merrion Street Upper, Dublin 2, were arraigned before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court;  each admitted one count of assault.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Alison Chawke pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to John McHugh on November 9th, 2023. Bill Chawke pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Gerard Cox on the same date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The two defendants pleaded guilty on a full facts basis, the court heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Previously Newcastle West District Court heard that Alison Chawke allegedly gouged the eyes of one victim and kicked the other victim in the head a number of times before biting him on the side of his face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court in Newcastle West also heard that she allegedly threw a pint glass at the two victims and a number of others who tried to intervene in the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court heard that Bill Chawke allegedly threw punches at both victims and that he gouged the eyes of one of them and hit his head off a bar counter at the hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Dunraven Arms is a well known and prestigious hotel that has hosted members of the British royal family, US presidents and Hollywood movie stars.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The four-star Dunraven Arms Hotel, Adare, Co Limerick\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/RU2HXIF2E32N75K45EM72AQMPA.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>The four-star Dunraven Arms Hotel, Adare, Co Limerick <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Prosecuting Garda Ronan Hayes of Adare Garda station previously gave evidence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2024\/10\/01\/daughter-and-son-of-prominent-publican-charged-with-violent-assault-in-co-limerick-hotel\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2024\/10\/01\/daughter-and-son-of-prominent-publican-charged-with-violent-assault-in-co-limerick-hotel\/\">arresting and charging<\/a> the two defendants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Alison Chawke was represented by senior counsel Mark Nicholas and Bill Chawke was  represented by barrister Henry Kelly, instructed by solicitor Michael Finucane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Prosecuting barrister Lily Buckley, instructed by County Limerick State Solicitor Brendan Gill,  said the court would see CCTV footage of the assaults on the night and hear victim impact statements from the two victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Judge Simon McAleese remanded the two defendants on continuing bail to appear before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for a further hearing on March 6th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A daughter and son of prominent publican Charlie Chawke pleaded guilty on Monday to assault causing harm to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":313709,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[36828,32151,61,60,1396,43],"class_list":{"0":"post-313708","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ireland","8":"tag-adare","9":"tag-charlie-chawke","10":"tag-ie","11":"tag-ireland","12":"tag-limerick","13":"tag-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/313708","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=313708"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/313708\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/313709"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=313708"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=313708"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=313708"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
