{"id":313710,"date":"2026-02-23T22:47:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T22:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/313710\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T22:47:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T22:47:08","slug":"at-least-73-dead-in-attempt-to-capture-mexican-cartel-boss-and-violent-aftermath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/313710\/","title":{"rendered":"At least 73 dead in attempt to capture Mexican cartel boss and violent aftermath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least 73 people died in Mexico\u2019s attempt to capture the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the violent aftermath of his death, authorities said as much of the country feared another wave of violence.<\/p>\n<p>The body count taken by security officials included security forces, suspected cartel members and others.<\/p>\n<p>Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as \u201cEl Mencho\u201d, was the boss of one of the fastest-growing criminal networks in Mexico, known for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine to the US and staging brazen attacks against government officials.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation responded to his death with widespread violence, including blocking roads and setting fire to vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Oseguera Cervantes died after a shootout in his home state of Jalisco as the Mexican military tried to capture him.<\/p>\n<p>Mexican defence secretary Ricardo Trevilla said on Monday that authorities had followed one of Oseguera Cervantes\u2019 romantic partners to his hideout in Tapalpa.<\/p>\n<p>Oseguera Cervantes and two bodyguards fled into a wooded area where they were seriously wounded in a firefight.<\/p>\n<p>They were taken into custody and died on the way to Mexico City, Mr Trevilla said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/at-least-73-dead-in-attempt-to-capture-mexican-cartel-boss-and-violent-aftermath.jpg\" alt=\"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum speaks to the media\" data-title=\"Mexico Cartel Leader Death\" data-copyright-holder=\"AP\" data-copyright-notice=\"Copyright 2026 The Associated Press. For other uses, additional clearances may be required.\"\/>Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged calm (Ginnette Riquelme\/AP)\n<\/p>\n<p>In a different location in Jalisco, soldiers also killed another high-ranking cartel member who Mr Trevilla said was coordinating violence and offering more than 1,000 dollars for every soldier killed.<\/p>\n<p>The dead included 25 members of the Mexican National Guard who were killed in six separate attacks, security secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Harfuch said some 30 criminal suspects were killed in Jalisco, and four others were killed in the neighbouring state of Michoacan.<\/p>\n<p>Also killed were a prison guard and an agent from the state prosecutor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>As the threat of violence loomed, several Mexican states cancelled school on Monday, while local and foreign governments warned their citizens to stay inside.<\/p>\n<p>President Claudia Sheinbaum urged calm, and authorities said all of the more than 250 cartel roadblocks across 20 states had been cleared by Monday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771886828_831_at-least-73-dead-in-attempt-to-capture-mexican-cartel-boss-and-violent-aftermath.jpg\" alt=\"A charred vehicle which was set on fire in Guadalajara\" data-title=\"Mexico Cartel Death\" data-copyright-holder=\"AP\" data-copyright-notice=\"Copyright 2026 The Associated Press. For other uses, additional clearances may be required.\"\/>Guadalajara was almost completely shut down on Sunday as fearful residents stayed home (Alejandra Leyva\/AP)\n<\/p>\n<p>The White House confirmed that the US provided intelligence support to the operation to capture the cartel leader and applauded Mexico\u2019s army for taking down a man who was one of the most wanted criminals in both countries.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico hoped the death of the world\u2019s biggest fentanyl traffickers would ease Trump administration pressure to do more against the cartels, but many people were on edge as they waited to see the powerful cartel\u2019s reaction.<\/p>\n<p>The US Embassy said via X that its personnel in eight cities and in Michoacan would shelter in place and work remotely on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>It warned US citizens in many parts of Mexico to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>Cars began circulating in Guadalajara before sunrise on Monday with the start of the workweek, a notable change from Sunday, when Jalisco\u2019s state capital and Mexico\u2019s second-largest city was almost completely shut down as fearful residents stayed home.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 people were stuck overnight in Guadalajara\u2019s zoo, where they slept in buses.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771886828_82_at-least-73-dead-in-attempt-to-capture-mexican-cartel-boss-and-violent-aftermath.jpg\" alt=\"Charred vehicles outside a shopping centre in Guadalajara\" data-title=\"Mexico Cartel Death\" data-copyright-holder=\"AP\" data-copyright-notice=\"Copyright 2026 The Associated Press. For other uses, additional clearances may be required.\"\/>The White House confirmed that the US provided intelligence support for the operation to capture the cartel leader (Armando Solis\/AP)\n<\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of Mr Trump and Ms Sheinbaum, he said, \u201cbilateral cooperation has reached unprecedented levels\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But the operation may also pave the way for more violence as rival criminal groups take advantage of the blow dealt to El Mencho\u2019s organisation, said David Mora, Mexico analyst for the International Crisis Group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis might be a moment in which those other groups see that the cartel is weakened and want to seize the opportunity for them to expand control and to gain control over Cartel Jalisco in those states,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since Ms Sheinbaum took office, \u201cthe army has been way more confrontational, combative against criminal groups in Mexico,\u201d Mr Mora said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is signalling to the US that if we keep cooperating, sharing intelligence, Mexico can do it.
