{"id":315150,"date":"2026-02-24T18:36:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T18:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/315150\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T18:36:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T18:36:09","slug":"irish-founded-fintech-stripe-valued-at-159bn-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/315150\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish-founded fintech Stripe valued at $159bn \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish-founded fintech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stripe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stripe\" target=\"_blank\">Stripe<\/a> has been valued at more than $159 billion (\u20ac135bn) following a tender offer that allowed employees to sell shares without going public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company said it had signed agreements with investors including Thrive Capital, Coatue, a16z and others to provide the majority of the capital for the tender offer, but it would also use some of its own money to repurchase shares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">News of the tender offer was first reported earlier this month by Axios, with a speculative value of $140 billion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Stripe\u2019s valuation has climbed in the past year, jumping more than $30 billion from the $107 billion it was valued at in September last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a regular update letter, the company said revenue generated by businesses on its platform rose more than a third last year, reaching $1.9 trillion. That is equivalent to roughly 1.6 per cent of global gross domestic product (GDP). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAll in all, 2025 was a strong year for the internet economy, and we\u2019re delighted to see so many of Stripe\u2019s customers do so well,\u201d the company said in the update. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/10\/29\/john-collisons-analysis-of-irelands-problems-is-a-little-naive\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Collison seems to have missed a fundamental truth about Irish politicsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Stripe, which was cofounded by brothers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-collison\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-collison\/\">Patrick<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-collison\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-collison\/\">John Collison<\/a> in 2010, has built an extensive payments infrastructure for companies that covers functions such as billing and subscription management, tax compliance, fraud prevention, embedded finance and global treasury management. Its Stripe Link payments platform is used by more than 200 million people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Stripe currently supports more than five million businesses, either directly or via platforms, including the industry\u2019s top <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a> companies, some of the largest blue-chip companies, big tech firms and startups. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Could Simon Harris\u2019s savings scheme for the \u2018middle classes\u2019 prove to be a sound investment?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company said more than half of the new companies joining Stripe in 2025 were based outside the US. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Stripe said it \u201cremained robustly profitable\u201d, without giving specific figures, and said it had continued to invest heavily in product development and acquisitions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSince our last update, we acquired Privy, which powers more than 110 million programmable wallets, and Metronome, which powers the complex usage-based billing models used by companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Confluent, and Nvidia,\u201d Stripe said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company has turned its attention to stablecoins \u2013 a type of cryptocurrency that is pegged to the value of a currency such as the US dollar \u2013 and agentic AI in commerce. Agenitc AI is an autonomous system that can think, plan, and take real-world actions. It acquired Bridge in 2025 and expanded the integration of stablecoins into Stripe\u2019s platform in recent months. The company said it was now looking at blockchain, with the launch of a blockchain purpose-built for payments in September. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn our view, agents will most likely soon be responsible for most internet transactions, and we will likely need blockchains that support more than one million \u2013 or even one billion \u2013 transactions per second,\u201d the company said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Agentic commerce has been \u201coverhyped\u201d in some corners, the company said, but it had the potential to be \u201cgenerationally impactful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s no forecasting exactly where agentic commerce will be by the end of 2026, but it\u2019s clear we\u2019ve already moved well beyond pure hype into a phase of building and real-world experimentation.
