\n\tYet the Spider-Man<\/a> extended universe isn\u2019t dead, either. <\/p>\n

\n\tSony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman confirms the studio is planning a \u201cfresh reboot\u201d to the Spider-Man extended universe after the franchise\u2019s string of box office disappointments (aside from the trio of Venom films, which performed well). <\/p>\n

\n\tRothman was asked by Matt Belloni on The Town podcast<\/a>, \u201cWhere are we in the Spider-Man franchise? Not the animated Spider-Verse. Is the larger Spider-Verse dead?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNo,\u201d replied Rothman. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAre you going to go back to those at some point?\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYes,\u201d Rothman confirmed. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut it\u2019ll be a fresh reboot?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNew people?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYes, yes.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe executive added that \u201cscarcity has value \u2026 you got to make the audience miss you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRothman also, for the first time, confirmed a 2021 report that Spider-Man: No Way Home was banned in China due to the film\u2019s climax taking place at the Statue of Liberty.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe executive pointed out the film made $1.9 billion globally, which \u201cpisses me off to have to say this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou say, \u2018$1.9 billion, what\u2019s wrong with [saying] 2?\u2019 Well, it didn\u2019t get into China, but in my mind [the film\u2019s box office is] over 2 [billion] because I know what we would have done in China.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[The China\u00a0Film\u00a0Administration] just said, \u2018Small thing, no problem, just cut out the Statue of Liberty\u2019 \u2014 which is where the climax is. That was their request.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNeedless to say, Rothman did not change the film \u2014 which might have been impossible given the sheer amount of screen time that takes place at the iconic New York landmark.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAlso, I really didn\u2019t look forward to sitting in front of Congress telling them why I cut the Statue of Liberty out at the request of the Chinese Communist Party,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n\tSony reportedly<\/a> courted China heavily for Spider-Man: No Way Home, even releasing a Chinese poster amid hopes it would be the first Marvel Phase 4 film to clear censorship approvals. The prior film, Far From Home, made $200 million in China. <\/p>\n

\n\tRothman was also asked about his relationship with Marvel boss Kevin Feige, and opined, \u201cThey\u2019re two people about whom I would say this \u2014 and maybe more if I think about it \u2014 but never bet against Jim Cameron and never bet against Kevin Feige.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe live-action Spider-Man universe movies were plagued by both poor reviews and weak box office. Launched with 2018\u2019s hit Venom, which set a high-water mark for the franchise with $856 million globally, the efforts included 2022\u2019s Morbius ($162 million globally), 2024\u2019s Madame Web ($100 million globally) and 2024\u2019s Kraven the Hunter (an abysmal $60 million globally against an estimated production budget of more than $100 million). <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"You can stop holding your breath for a Madame Web 2.
