AI might be the problem \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">I have an MBA from Smurfit Graduate Business School at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-college-dublin-ucd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-college-dublin-ucd\/\">University College Dublin<\/a>, one of the most respected schools and degrees across Europe. Since I finished, I have upskilled myself in every way possible, including technical skills and financial skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, I have failed to secure a decent role in the one year that I have been trying, putting myself under a tremendous amount of financial and emotional pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">I believe it\u2019s the severe dependence on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\">AI<\/a> tools which is causing the problem, where my transferable skills might fail to be identified. It seems the commitment one puts into a postgraduate programme \u2013 financial and personal \u2013 might be totally ignored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At times, I would see a job that\u2019s right under my nose, but when I apply for it, nothing happens. It\u2019s been a year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">I have applied on various job boards, as well as through LinkedIn and direct company websites. I understand that rejection is natural where someone feels a candidate might not be suitable. But how can every single application be rejected?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Most employers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\">Ireland<\/a> are now using AI systems to manage \u201chigh volumes of applications\u201d, according to Breda Dooley, head of recruitment at Matrix Recruitment, meaning applicants must adapt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A survey released by IrishJobs last September suggests nearly eight in 10 employers are using such systems in the hiring process, such as screening submitted CVs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some 78 per cent of the 475 recruiters surveyed said they use AI at some point in their recruitment process to \u201cenhance productivity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/work\/2025\/12\/22\/from-maternity-leave-queries-to-work-from-home-policies-submit-your-work-related-questions-here\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">From maternity leave queries to work from home policies: Submit your work-related questions hereOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Noting that employers are using AI to identify those that \u201cbest match the role\u201d, Dooley says candidates now need to be \u201cfar more intentional in how they apply\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This means adapting CVs for every role, mirroring the language used in the job description and keeping formatting simple to \u201csignificantly improve your chances of being shortlisted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The use of AI systems in recruitment processes, particularly for analysing and filtering job applications, and evaluating candidates, has been deemed one of the \u201chigh-risk\u201d uses under the EU AI Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Several requirements, which apply from August 2026, have been set out for such high-risk uses under the act, including ensuring they can be \u201ceffectively overseen\u201d. This is alongside additional requirements in risk management, record-keeping, accuracy and robustness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Noting the effects on the reader of searching for a year without success, Dooley says the jobs market can be \u201cincredibly difficult\u201d to navigate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe financial and emotional pressure that comes with this cannot be underestimated,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Alongside a need to adapt to the widespread use of AI in the recruitment process, Dooley points out the reader places a \u201cheavy emphasis on their MBA qualification from the outset\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She added: \u201cWhile an MBA from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ucd-michael-smurfit-graduate-business-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ucd-michael-smurfit-graduate-business-school\/\">Smurfit Business School<\/a> is undoubtedly impressive, education alone rarely gives hiring managers enough information to assess a candidate\u2019s suitability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf there is an overemphasis on the MBA in their CV, at the expense of experience and even soft skills, it may be the reason they are having little success in their job hunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While MBAs are designed to prepare individuals for senior management, by exposing them to all areas of business, they are \u201cnot a substitute for experience\u201d, Dooley says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf an application focuses more on what was studied rather than what was done, hiring managers may struggle to visualise the candidate in the role they need to fill,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She adds that it is worth seeking an objective opinion on a CV, saying recruiters can often \u201censure a CV is seen by a hiring manager, even when automated systems might otherwise filter it out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dooley further suggests \u201cactively networking\u201d, saying an MBA can provide a \u201cready-made network that they must tap into if they wish to get ahead\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The MBA Association of Ireland, for example, can be \u201cinvaluable\u201d in building relationships, widening a professional circle and \u201cuncovering opportunities that never reach the public market\u201d, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If you have work-related questions, from how to deal with burnout to running your own business, The Irish Times Work Q&amp;A column is here to help.
