{"id":317797,"date":"2026-02-26T06:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T06:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/317797\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T06:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T06:28:11","slug":"two-judges-nominated-for-appointment-to-supreme-court-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/317797\/","title":{"rendered":"Two judges nominated for appointment to Supreme Court \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two judges of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/court-of-appeal\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/court-of-appeal\/\">Court of Appeal<\/a> are to be nominated by the Government to fill two vacancies on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/supreme-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/supreme-court\/\">Supreme Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Judges Niamh Hyland and Brian O\u2019Moore are the nominees agreed to replace Judge Elizabeth Dunne, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/02\/20\/calm-thoughtful-supreme-court-judge-retires-creating-one-of-two-pending-vacancies\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/02\/20\/calm-thoughtful-supreme-court-judge-retires-creating-one-of-two-pending-vacancies\/\">who retired last week<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/justice-peter-charleton\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/justice-peter-charleton\/\">Judge Peter Charleton<\/a>, who is due to retire in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The nominations mean the nine-member Supreme Court will be comprised of three female and six male judges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Following nomination by the Government, the judges will be formally appointed on a later date by President Catherine Connolly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their appointments will be the first to be made to the Supreme Court under a process conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/judicial-appointments-commission\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/judicial-appointments-commission\/\">Judicial Appointments Commission<\/a>, established in January 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Chaired by the Chief Justice, the nine-member commission comprises four judges and four lay members, with the Attorney General a non-voting member.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The commission operates under the Judicial Appointments Commission Act 2023, which is aimed at ensuring a transparent, merit-based process for judicial appointments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The process required those interested in the Supreme Court positions to formally apply to the commission which, after conducting interviews, recommended five names for Government consideration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hyland, who was called to the Bar in 1994, was appointed a judge of the High Court in 2019. In October 2024, she was promoted to the Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Moore was called to the Bar in 1984 and became a judge of the High Court in late 2019.
