{"id":318454,"date":"2026-02-26T14:51:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T14:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/318454\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T14:51:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T14:51:10","slug":"surge-in-potato-imports-led-to-seizures-of-egyptian-vegetables-affected-by-tuber-moth-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/318454\/","title":{"rendered":"Surge in potato imports led to seizures of Egyptian vegetables affected by \u2018tuber moth\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Poor European harvests led to a surge in potato imports in 2024 but those arriving in Ireland from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/egypt\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/egypt\/\">Egypt<\/a> were among hundreds of tonnes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/food-production\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/food-production\/\">foodstuffs<\/a> seized by customs officials. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Egyptian potatoes, seeds from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\">UK<\/a>, shellfish from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/india\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/india\/\">India<\/a> and honey from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\/\">China<\/a> were among 1,782 tonnes of food and plant products seized at Irish ports due to safety issues and other regulatory reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-agriculture-food-and-the-marine\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-agriculture-food-and-the-marine\/\">Department of Agriculture<\/a> is responsible for ensuring imports of food are safe and meet conditions set out in European legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It provided data on seizures of imports at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-port\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-port\/\">Dublin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rosslare\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rosslare\/\">Rosslare<\/a> ports in response to a parliamentary question from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\">Social Democrats<\/a> TD Aidan Farrelly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some 789 tonnes of the seizures \u2013 44 per cent of the total \u2013 were imports from Egypt with the majority of this relating to vegetables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department said there was a shortage of potato supplies in Europe in 2024 due to poor harvests and increased global demand. As a result, more potatoes were imported, including from Egypt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said potato imports from Egypt were subject to \u201cincreased official controls based on risk, following a high incidence of noncompliances identified during European import checks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 2024, \u201cmultiple consignments\u201d were seized at ports of entry to Ireland \u201cdue to the detection of a quarantine pest, the potato tuber moth &#8230; which is a plant health risk\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Imports from the UK amounted to some 772 tonnes of the seizures \u2013 43 per cent of the total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Of this, almost 300 tonnes was in the category of \u201coil, seeds and oleaginous fruits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department said seeds and plants for planting accounted for the products seized under this category primarily due to the absence of a required accompanying phytosanitary certificate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said consignments from Ireland\u2019s closest neighbour account for about 80 per cent of all those subject to import controls, that the level of seizures is not disproportionate and reflects \u201cthe volume of consignments inspected rather than an elevated level of noncompliance specific to the UK\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Seizures of food from India came to almost 106 tonnes.
