{"id":318724,"date":"2026-02-26T18:21:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T18:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/318724\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T18:21:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T18:21:16","slug":"young-people-out-of-work-training-and-education-edges-closer-to-one-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/318724\/","title":{"rendered":"Young people out of work, training and education edges closer to one million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c0l7elxrr7ko\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">independent inquiry<\/a> into the rise in young people not working or studying is under way, with its conclusions due to be published in the summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Former Labour Health Secretary Alan Milburn, who is heading it up, said when the inquiry launched that he would approach the issue &#8220;with sensitivity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Speaking to Matt Chorley on BBC 5 Live on Thursday, Milburn dismissed the idea that there was a &#8220;snowflake&#8221; generation who were reluctant to work or less resilient than previous generations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Young people want the the opportunity to work,&#8221; he said. &#8220;To get a decent career and move on in life and own their own home and all the things that young people down the generations have wanted to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The problem is the opportunities sometimes are just not available to them.
