When\u00a0Avengers: Doomsday<\/a> opens this December, it will be everywhere. Like destiny, it will be an inevitability from which pop culture cannot run\u2026 unless you\u2019re in an IMAX screen in the US.<\/p>\n

The reason?\u00a0Dune: Part Three<\/a> got first dibs.<\/p>\n

Doomsday was, at one time, slated to release in just a few months\u2019 time on May 1, 2026, only for it to shuffle later<\/a> on Disney\u2019s release schedule\u2014a shuffle that inadvertently put it landing day-and-date alongside Denis Villeneuve\u2019s final chapter<\/a> in his Dune trilogy on December 18.<\/p>\n

Putting the \u201cBarbenheimer\u201d of it all aside, what that accidentally means for\u00a0Doomsday is that it will be locked out of IMAX\u2019s premium screen format entirely. The theater company confirmed recently as part of an investor presentation<\/a> that\u00a0Dune had already secured exclusive IMAX screening rights in the United States for its opening weekend (as there wasn\u2019t previously competition for its release date), meaning\u00a0Doomsday will only screen in IMAX on opening weekend internationally.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s long been a question if, out of one or the other, Disney or Warner Bros. will blink and shuffle dates<\/a> around to avoid\u00a0Doomsday\u00a0and\u00a0Dune clashing. But the loss of a lucrative premium format like IMAX\u2014and the increased cash per ticket sale that comes with it\u2014even if for a short time, now means the ball is in Disney\u2019s court on that front.<\/p>\n

That said, it\u2019s probably\u00a0not going to influence Disney\u2019s plans for\u00a0Doomsday too much. The studio is now pretty locked into that December 18 release date\u2014they\u2019re still even doing that livestream countdown<\/a> on Marvel\u2019s YouTube, which has been running for a month and a half so far since the final teaser drop<\/a>. Whether or not superhero fatigue is truly real<\/a>, or at least applies to an\u00a0Avengers movie, remains to be seen\u2014but there\u2019s little doubt a lack of IMAX showings on opening weekend will stop\u00a0Doomsday from making a lot of money for Marvel and the House of Mouse.<\/p>\n
