As more people waged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a68916390\/are-carbs-actually-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a68916390\/are-carbs-actually-good\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"war against carbs\" data-node-id=\"0.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">war against carbs<\/a>, food companies responded with lots of low- or no-carb product alternatives to your usual bread and pasta.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While convenient, researchers are finding these low-carb products\u2014filled with refined carbs rather than whole grains\u2014can make your diet backfire big time. The study, published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/10.1016\/j.jacc.2025.12.038\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/10.1016\/j.jacc.2025.12.038\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Journal of the American College of Cardiology\" data-node-id=\"1.1.0\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Journal of the American College of Cardiology<\/a>, found a link between a low-carb diet mainly consisting of refined carbs with future heart problems.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you\u2019re interested in trying a low-carb diet or are already on one, this is news you can use.<\/p>\n<p>Quality of Carbs Matters More Than Quantity<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The researchers collected nutrition data from nearly 200,000 people\u201442,720 were men\u2014already enrolled in three separate studies. They focused their efforts on the survey answers people gave of their regular food choices and broke it down by several categories. These included animal-based vs plant-based foods and whole grains versus refined carbs.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The data also included how many people ended up developing heart problems years after the study began. Of the nearly 200,000 people, there was 20,033 confirmed cases of coronary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a63096101\/signs-of-heart-disease-in-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a63096101\/signs-of-heart-disease-in-men\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"heart disease\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">heart disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A closer analysis showed people following low-carb and low-fat diets had a 15 percent lower risk of heart disease. However, this was only when their diets comprised of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a63184571\/high-protein-plant-based-meals\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a63184571\/high-protein-plant-based-meals\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"plant-based foods\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plant-based foods<\/a>, whole foods, and unsaturated fats. Blood samples from these participants also showed signs of better cardiovascular health, such as higher HDL \u201cgood&#8221; cholesterol, lower inflammation, and lower levels of fats in the blood.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">On the flip side, people who ate low-carb and low-fat diets that contained refined carbs and were higher in animal proteins and fats had a higher risk of coronary heart disease. <\/p>\n<p>2 Huge Problems With Low-Carb Diets<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The likely reason people mess up low-carb diets is because the term &#8216;low-carb&#8217; is such a broad category, explains <a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/profile\/zhiyuan-wu\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/profile\/zhiyuan-wu\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Zhiyuan Wu, PhD\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zhiyuan Wu, PhD<\/a>, lead study author and postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. \u201cPeople following a low-carbohydrate diet can construct it in very different ways.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">For example, Wu says one set of people on a low-carb diet may choose healthier fat sources, like nuts and olive oil. Others might lean more into red meat and full-fat dairy that technically qualify as low-carb.\u201cThese choices can lead to very different health outcomes,\u201d Wu says. \u201cThe key challenge is selecting high-quality sources of fats and protein when reducing carbohydrates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">There&#8217;s also a second issue with low-carb diets\u2014you can sometimes feel like you&#8217;re starving. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Carbohydrates act as appetite suppressors, helping you feel full. So when people start a low-carb diet, a common mistake is not replacing the missing food with other foods, says registered dietitian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sonya.angelone\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sonya.angelone\/?hl=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Sonya Angelone, PhD, RDN\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sonya Angelone, PhD, RDN<\/a>. &#8220;That leads to hunger and difficulty maintaining the diet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">One big factor might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a70203442\/how-much-fiber-per-day-grams\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a70203442\/how-much-fiber-per-day-grams\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"fiber\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fiber<\/a>\u2014that critical stomach-filling nutrient. Whole, minimally processed carbohydrates usually have a good dose of fiber. Refined carbs? Not so much.<\/p>\n<p>How to Approach a Low-Carb Diet the Right Way<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Wu says it\u2019s easy to default to less healthy options without careful planning. Instead of villainizing carbs, Angelone first recommends revisiting what is your usual dietary foundations. Are you including protein-rich foods like eggs, fish, or tofu? Are you adding non-starchy veggies such as broccoli and bell peppers to color up your plate? And don&#8217;t forget healthy fats like avocado and extra virgin olive oil.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Carbs have a place in your meal plan as well.
