{"id":321493,"date":"2026-02-28T08:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T08:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/321493\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T08:20:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T08:20:08","slug":"legendary-referee-and-irelands-oldest-man-to-be-honoured-at-offaly-towns-st-patricks-day-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/321493\/","title":{"rendered":"Legendary referee and Ireland&#8217;s oldest man to be honoured at Offaly town&#8217;s St Patrick&#8217;s Day parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LEGENDARY referee and Ireland&#8217;s oldest man will be honoured at this year&#8217;s St Patrick&#8217;s Day parade in Clara.<\/p>\n<p>Referee Carthage (Catch) Buckley will officially cut the tape at this year&#8217;s parade on Tuesday, March 17 next, and he will be joined by Ireland&#8217;s oldest man, Paddy Claffey (104) from nearby Ferbane.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s parade is a special occasion as it marks 50 years since organiser Bertie McMahon organised his first parade in the town, the Christmas event in 1976.<\/p>\n<p>As always the parade in honour of our patron saint will be a colourful spectacle with floats, Irish dancers and much more.<\/p>\n<p>The parade will commence at 12.20pm on St Patrick&#8217;s Day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.offalyexpress.ie\/news\/ecolive\/2025468\/are-there-any-frogs-incounty-offaly.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">READ NEXT: Are there any frogs in\u202fcounty Offaly?\u202f<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Catch Buckley has an impressive record as a referee and footballer<\/p>\n<p>He refereed many games in Offaly and also the U21 and minor All-Irelands in 1985 and 1986.
