{"id":321838,"date":"2026-02-28T13:11:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T13:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/321838\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T13:11:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T13:11:08","slug":"family-at-centre-of-department-of-justice-protest-to-be-deported-to-south-africa-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/321838\/","title":{"rendered":"Family at centre of Department of Justice protest to be deported to South Africa \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The family at the centre of a large protest outside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-justice\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-justice\/\">Department of Justice<\/a> earlier this month is being deported from Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Titilayo Oluwakemi Oyekanmi said she and her three sons are being deported to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/south-africa\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/south-africa\/\">South Africa<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her sons Samuel, Joseph and Genesis, who are aged between five and 18, attended local schools and sports clubs in south Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The family\u2019s neighbours and friends had appealed to the department not to proceed with the deportation, saying the family\u2019s removal would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/02\/05\/david-gillick-among-those-calling-for-south-african-teen-and-family-not-to-be-deported\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/02\/05\/david-gillick-among-those-calling-for-south-african-teen-and-family-not-to-be-deported\/\">a huge loss to the area<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/migrant-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/migrant-crisis\/\">community<\/a> said they were shocked and saddened by the development on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFor the friends who gathered in support, there was no chance to say goodbye,\u201d they said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group said the family believed they would have more time to prepare for the deportation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis glimmer of hope was taken away from Titi and her three children this morning, as an uncertain future now awaits,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Oyekanmi family arrived in the State in late 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Titilayo, who is originally from Nigeria, said she had sought asylum after being beaten by a gang and threatened at gunpoint in South Africa. She said she fears for her family\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Stephen Kirwan of KOD Lyons, the family\u2019s solicitor, on Saturday described the situation as \u201cabsolutely appalling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The family\u2019s international protection application was rejected and a subsequent appeal was unsuccessful. They received a deportation order last April. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kirwan later applied for the order to be revoked on humanitarian grounds, but this has not been successful. The family was granted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2026\/02\/19\/family-facing-deportation-to-south-africa-relieved-by-temporary-reprieve\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2026\/02\/19\/family-facing-deportation-to-south-africa-relieved-by-temporary-reprieve\/\">temporary reprieve earlier this month<\/a>, but were informed on Friday they have to leave Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hundreds of people, including many schoolchildren, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/02\/10\/south-dublin-community-urges-quashing-of-deportation-order-against-family\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/02\/10\/south-dublin-community-urges-quashing-of-deportation-order-against-family\/\">attended a protest<\/a> in solidarity with the family outside the department on February 10th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Labour leader Ivana Bacik was among the politicians who had asked Minister for Justice Jim O\u2019Callaghan to intervene in the case. The Dublin Bay South TD said on Saturday she will raise the case with the Minister again next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The two older boys are talented at sports and play rugby with De La Salle Palmerston FC. Joseph (14) is a member of Dundrum South Dublin Athletics Club and has been attending Gonzaga College on a scholarship since September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Samuel was hoping to sit his Leaving Cert exams at Ballinteer Community School in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Joseph had been due to play a rugby match with De La Salle Palmerston on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Olympic athlete David Gillick, who has coached Joseph at DSD Athletics Club, was among those who had written to the department in support of the family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In his letter, the national men\u2019s 400m record holder said Joseph has \u201cremarkable athletic ability\u201d and \u201chas been an absolute joy to coach\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBeyond his athletic achievements, Joseph is an exceptional young person \u2013 full of life, ambition and dreams. His talents extend beyond athletics, as he is already making an impact on the rugby field with Gonzaga College.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cJoseph\u2019s family has also made a wonderful contribution to both the local and wider community. They have integrated seamlessly and serve as shining examples of how successful and positive integration can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Justice said it cannot comment on individual cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPeople can apply for international protection in Ireland if they have come to escape persecution in their own country or if they cannot return to their country because they have a well-founded fear for their safety,\u201d an earlier statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBoth the International Protection Office and the International Protection Appeals Tribunal [IPAT] are fully independent in deciding whether or not to grant international protection. Each application is examined individually on its own merits, in line with national and international asylum law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPeople who have been refused international protection and have exhausted the appeals avenues through the IPAT are entitled to submit a request to review their permission to remain where their circumstances have changed since their initial application.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The statement added that if a person\u2019s application for international protection is refused and they are ordered to leave the State, \u201cthey must do so\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTheir case to remain in the State has been considered in detail and the appeals processes have been concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBefore a deportation order is made, the person is offered assistance to return home voluntarily.
