{"id":321868,"date":"2026-02-28T13:39:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T13:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/321868\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T13:39:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T13:39:09","slug":"patrick-odonovan-wont-be-spending-his-first-holy-communion-money-on-fixing-oriel-park-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/321868\/","title":{"rendered":"Patrick O\u2019Donovan won\u2019t be spending his First Holy Communion money on fixing Oriel Park \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sports and Culture Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-o-donovan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-o-donovan\/\">Patrick O\u2019Donovan<\/a> had a very lively week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It opened on a high note last weekend when he officially unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dundalk-fc\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dundalk-fc\/\">Dundalk United<\/a>\u2019s new astro turf pitch and floodlights in Oriel Park. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His department gave half a million euro towards the stadium\u2019s redevelopment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But to his utter disgust, within 20 minutes of the formal opening ceremony the place \u201cwas on fire\u201d and a few days later he also combusted during a rollicking interview with RT\u00c9\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-mccullagh\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-mccullagh\/\">David McCullagh<\/a>, adding significantly to the gaiety of the nation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Early into the Louth derby between Dundalk and Drogheda, some of the travelling Boyneside fans lobbed volleys of flares on to the pristine surface, causing more than \u20ac70,000 worth of damage. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Patrick was incandescent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">By the end of the match \u201cthe pitch looked like it was pock-ridden with badger holes\u201d, he declared. \u201cI mean, I saw it myself, it was like an air raid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some people thought what happened was hilarious, but \u201cif a woman\u2019s hair had been set on fire and she was burnt within an inch of her life we\u2019d have a different conversation this morning\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Minister was taking it very personally. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/soccer\/2026\/02\/26\/drogheda-united-hit-with-away-supporter-ban-and-15000-fine-following-oriel-park-damage\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drogheda United hit with away supporter ban and \u20ac15,000 fine following Oriel Park flare damageOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Had someone stolen Patrick\u2019s First Holy Communion money (it\u2019s widely believed he still has it) and then stumbled upon the stash he squirrelled away after his Confirmation, he couldn\u2019t have been more annoyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOne thing\u2019s for certain,\u201d he fumed. \u201cI won\u2019t be paying for the damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Then he caused consternation by threatening to suspend State funding for astro pitches until this \u201cgougerism and tuggery\u201d is seriously tackled by the clubs and the FAI. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tuggery. Pure tuggery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Wednesday, Patrick set the airwaves on fire again, this time during an interview on Limerick Today with Joe Nash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was very keen to talk about the plan to open a permanent Limerick outpost of the National Museum of Ireland which will celebrate and tell the stories of Irish women through the ages. It will be housed in a \u20ac30 million exhibition space which local billionaire JP McManus wants to gift to the State. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe\u2019re not talking about people who broke the glass ceiling; we\u2019re talking about the people who were kept under the glass ceiling for decades,\u201d he quivered as the feminist awakening of Patrick O\u2019Donovan flowered live on the local radio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said the entire Government agrees that \u201cwe should have some space to celebrate Irish women\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The venue in question used to be home to the International Rugby Experience. Many women have stories to tell about their international rugby experiences, but they would prefer not to remember them, let alone put them in a museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Patrick even teased listeners about an exhibition he has in mind \u201cwhich will be massively exciting for Limerick and for Ireland\u201d but he didn\u2019t elaborate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy focus now is to turn this world facility, which has lain idle for the last number of months, into a major visitor attraction under the auspices of my department, and that\u2019s my focus,\u201d he told Joe Nash. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They must be absolutely thrilled above in the National Museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Joe kept asking questions about specific details of the new project. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cJoe, no one would have expected yesterday that we would be at this stage,\u201d sulked the Minister, refusing to \u201cput any time frames out, other than to say the train left the station yesterday &#8230; It\u2019ll be opened when it\u2019s opened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But Joe kept probing, asking twice if the Ardagh Chalice will be returned to the county for display. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Look, huffed Patrick, it\u2019s primarily going to be about the women. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And will local people staff the museum? Will it have a local manager?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">From tuggery and badger holes in Dundalk to radio tuggery and too much badgering in Limerick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cJaaysus, Joe,\u201d replied the Minister for Culture, \u201cYou\u2019re really tearing the arse out of it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Triple crowned<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A triple slam of victories against the old enemy on the rugby pitch last weekend when Ireland trounced England in the Six Nations championship, the under-20s did likewise in their encounter, and the Oireachtas rugby team saw off their Westminster counterparts with a resounding win in East London on the eve of the big match. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There were very few politicians in the Irish selection as some of the usual stalwarts couldn\u2019t make it to London for the Friday night clash. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister of State Neale Richmond, a mainstay of the team, has handed the captain\u2019s armband to his Fine Gael colleague, Senator Garret Ahearn. Neale couldn\u2019t tog out last week as he was on Government business in Uganda. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Houses of the Oireachtas team beat a selection from the Lords and the Commons with a handsome 17-0 scoreline. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Man of the match was the D\u00e1il\u2019s new deputy head usher, James Smyth, who scored the visitors\u2019 final try. A sturdy prop, Captain Ahearn said his try was similar to Jamie Heaslip\u2019s famous one when he fell over the line at the end of a lengthy string of moves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">James was presented with his award (a bottle of House of Commons port) at a reception afterwards in the Irish embassy. Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin, who was over for an engagement at Cambridge University, popped in to offer his congratulations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fianna F\u00e1il TD for Offaly Tony McCormack also lined out along with Independent TD Barry Heneghan and former senator John McGahon. Former FG TD Alan Farrell was the kit man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As the team was missing a few players, Barry asked some of his mates who work in London to pitch in. Photograph: Brian Lawless\/PA McEntee\u2019s military makeover<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Minister for Defence wants to civilise all the savages in the Defence Forces with a new \u201ccivilisation\u201d policy and has ordered the top brass to tell her by July how this mammoth task will be achieved. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">July, of course, is when Ireland takes over the EU presidency and, above all else, the number one objective in Merrion Street is to ensure that we don\u2019t make a holy show of ourselves in front of the visiting bigwigs during our prestigious six-month stint at the helm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Helen McEntee revealed her daring makeover for the military in a written answer this week to Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Darren O\u2019Rourke, who asked what efforts are being made to increase numbers and strengthen our Defence Forces. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the course of a detailed reply, the Minister said it was very positive to see interest growing in Defence Forces careers, with a total of 16,510 applications received last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There are special measures in place to beef up the numbers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOne of the key actions I specified in the recently published strategic framework, was the need for the Defence Forces to submit a civilisation strategy for my approval no later than July this year,\u201d she says in her reply to her Meath East constituency colleague. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe civilisation strategy will identify the roles and approach to significantly increase the scale and numbers of civilians working within our Defence Forces to support our Defence Forces personnel carrying out military tasks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/02\/26\/ireland-signs-agreement-with-france-for-joint-military-training-and-intel-sharing\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland signs agreement with France for joint military training and intel sharingOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sources within Fine Gael tell us that if their Minister\u2019s \u201ccivilisation strategy\u201d is a success the plan is to roll out the template in selected areas, beginning with Coalition partners Fianna F\u00e1il. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But it\u2019s all very hush-hush at the moment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some of the eagle-eyed anoraks in Leinster House who spotted the low-key launch of this interesting strategy wonder if its title is a typo (referring to McEntee as Minister Malaprop), but others point to controversies involving the Defence Forces in recent years and are not so sure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">So just five months to complete Operation Civilisation Strategy, by which time the Government hopes our national defences will be fortified sufficiently to cope with the EU presidency and the increasing possibility of a September visit by US president Donald Trump in the middle of it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His family-owned Doonbeg golf course is hosting this year\u2019s Irish Open Golf Championship. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Julia Carmichael, chair of the Irish US Alumni Association, and US ambassador Edward Walsh\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/VLHPYLQTZNCGNBA6YPD52YWFSU.JPG\"   width=\"800\" height=\"889\"\/>Julia Carmichael, chair of the Irish US Alumni Association, and US ambassador Edward Walsh <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US ambassador to Ireland, Edward Walsh, was dropping heavy hints this week about his golfing buddy Donald decamping to Co Clare for the championship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe do have a potential presidential visit at the Irish Open in September,\u201d Walsh told an American Chamber of Commerce Ireland event in Dublin on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And at a second event organised by the Irish US Alumni Association held in the Merrion Square HQ of Notre Dame University, the ambassador didn\u2019t rush to dampen speculation that his close friend will jet into the west of Ireland to watch the action. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish-American businessman Walsh is a member of the Trump National Golf Club at Bedminster, New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And speaking of New Jersey, the ambassador \u2013 who has family connections to the Banner county, was presented with a new Clare jersey by the Alumni Association. The number on the back marks this year\u2019s 250th anniversary of American Independence.<\/p>\n<p>SNA snafu<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At a crisis meeting late on Monday night, in the teeth of a ferocious public backlash, Government leaders did a screeching U-turn on the plan to change the way special needs assistants (SNAs) are allocated to schools. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The climbdown gave some respite to Coalition TDs under heavy fire in their constituencies from worried teachers and parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among those welcoming the statement with a pre-midnight online post was Emer Higgins, Minister of State at the Department of Children, Disability and Equality. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It couldn\u2019t have come at a better time for the Fine Gael deputy as she was visiting a special school in her Dublin Mid-West constituency the following day and at least all that SNA unpleasantness would be out of the way for the foreseeable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Afterwards, Emer put up a lovely snap of her visit to Lucan Community Special School, thereby bagging herself the title of Most Tone Deaf Ministerial Photo Op of the Week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to see this wonderful special school up and running, with 30 students already thriving in a supportive and nurturing environment,\u201d she wrote, describing the dedication of the principal and her team as \u201ctruly inspiring\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Which is more than can be said for the Minister. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The online response was far from positive.
