There are around 100 pubs and bars in the city of Cork, but despite some strong competition there is one boozer that stands head and shoulders above the rest<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re planning to visit any city in Ireland, it\u2019s a good idea to sample a wide variety of its pubs<\/a>. But sometimes you hit on a hostelry that is so perfect it\u2019s hard to drag yourself out of there and try somewhere new.<\/p>\n

That was my experience with the 130-year-old Sin \u00c9 on Coburg St., Cork. Voted one of the best places in the world to spend St Patrick\u2019s Day<\/a>, Sin \u00c9 also used to be one of the best places to get a haircut. The pub\u2019s upstairs room was for many years rented by a barber.<\/p>\n

The pub\u2019s only downside is floor space. It\u2019s a tiny bar at the best of times, and with the regular traditional Irish band taking up four or five chairs at the back of the pub things can get a little cramped.<\/p>\n

Things only get more crowded if the occasional international superstar show up. After his sellout concert at P\u00e1irc U\u00ed Chaoimh in 2024, Bruce Springsteen popped in for a pint and played a few numbers to delighted Sin \u00c9 patrons.<\/p>\n

Even without impromptu appearances from global music icons, the tiny pub on Coburg St is a fantastic place to while away a rainy afternoon.<\/p>\n

But, I\u2019d remind you, if you’re the kind of drinker who likes to sit around a table with friends and play a game or two of cards while you savour your Guinness, be sure to get there early. The Sin \u00c9 is very much on the tourist trail these days and it tends to fill up early.<\/p>\n

The pub’s name roughly translates to “That’s it,” and certainly once you’ve found it, your search for the perfect spot may well be over.<\/p>\n

Whether or not the Sin \u00c9 serves the city\u2019s best Guinness is very much a subjective question. For my \u20ac7, the nearby Old Oak supplied a marginally superior pint. But when it comes to questions of atmosphere, service and music selections the Coburg St pub can\u2019t be beaten.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not the only person that feels that way. One recent TripAdvisor review calls it \u201cThe best pub in the world,\u201d and even among the more negative assessments the Sin \u00c9 is still hailed as \u201cone of the best pubs in Cork.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a small pub that caters to a tight-knit community of locals there\u2019s always the concern that outsiders might feel a bit frozen out, but that really wasn\u2019t my experience.<\/p>\n

Most of the locals were friendly enough, and indeed one abundantly refreshed young woman was so over-friendly that she was eventually escorted off the premises by security staff.<\/p>\n

For my part, I managed to remain in my seat from lunchtime until the place closed. It\u2019s certainly my top recommendation if you\u2019re visiting Cork, but try to avoid mid-February.
