{"id":325251,"date":"2026-03-02T17:07:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T17:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/325251\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T17:07:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T17:07:09","slug":"one-simple-trick-could-help-tardigrades-survive-in-martian-dirt-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/325251\/","title":{"rendered":"One Simple Trick Could Help Tardigrades Survive in Martian Dirt : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tardigrades are renowned for their exceptional survival skills, but one environment has been found to test them to the limit.<\/p>\n<p>Exposed to a mix of minerals designed to replicate dirt found on  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mars\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73083\" data-postid=\"193733\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Mars<\/a>, two different species of tardigrades struggled to survive, declining rapidly in numbers in just a few days.<\/p>\n<p>However, once the simulated Mars dirt had been rinsed with water, the microscopic animals fared much better \u2013 an encouraging discovery for future farming efforts on the red planet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When considering sending people to non-Earth environments, we need to understand two things: how the environment will impact the people and how the people will impact the environment,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/research\/story\/water-bears-reveal-potential-adapting-protecting-martian-resources\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says microbiologist Corien Bakermans<\/a> of Pennsylvania State University.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With this research, we&#8217;re looking at a potential resource for being able to grow plants as part of establishing a healthy community \u2013 but we&#8217;re also looking at whether there are any inherent damaging conditions in the regolith that could help protect against contamination from Earth, which is a goal of planetary protection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tardigrades-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"482\" class=\"size-full wp-image-193736\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The top three images show tardigrades in Earth sand, while the bottom four are in Mars regolith simulant. (Corien Bakermans\/Penn State)<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/experiments-show-soil-from-the-moon-and-mars-could-support-crops\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous experiments<\/a> have identified at least some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/tomatoes-peas-and-8-other-crops-have-been-grown-in-mars-equivalent-soil\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plants that can grow<\/a> in simulated Mars dirt \u2013 or regolith \u2013 there&#8217;s still a lot we don&#8217;t know about how many of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earthworms-can-reproduce-in-fertilised-mars-soil-simulant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s organisms<\/a> might respond to it.<\/p>\n<p>Here on our home planet, tardigrades are everywhere. These microscopic eight-legged animals bustle about in a wide range of conditions around the globe. They play important roles in their ecosystems, both predator and prey.<\/p>\n<p>If we ever try to build functioning soil ecosystems on Mars, organisms like tardigrades could help regulate microbial communities.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re also a good model organism for studying animal development and survival under extreme conditions. Tardigrades are among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/are-tardigrades-the-most-indestructible-animals-on-earth-there-s-a-close-contender\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hardiest critters on the planet<\/a> thanks to a survival toolkit that includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/tardigrades-have-a-genetic-secret-and-it-could-boost-human-resilience\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protein that protects<\/a> their DNA, a dehydrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-have-literally-unearthed-a-whole-new-species-of-tardigrade\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;tun&#8217; state<\/a> they can enter when external conditions become untenable, and highly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-how-tardigrades-survive-blasts-of-radiation-and-its-weird\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effective damage repair<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With crewed missions to Mars just over the space-exploration horizon (hopefully), Bakermans and her colleagues turned to tardigrades as a way to assess the habitability of Mars regolith and maybe find ways to improve it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know a lot about bacteria and fungi in simulated regolith, but very little about how they impact animals \u2013 even microscopic animals, like tardigrades,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/research\/story\/water-bears-reveal-potential-adapting-protecting-martian-resources\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bakermans says<\/a>. &#8220;We investigated the specific, isolated impact of the regolith on tardigrades.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Their experiments focused on two species of tardigrade: Ramazzottius cf. varieornatus, a hardy land-dwelling species, and Hypsibius exemplaris, which lives in freshwater.<\/p>\n<p>Groups of each species were placed in two different Mars regolith simulants, called MGS-1 and OUCM-1, and observed for several days. Groups of each species were also placed in normal Earth beach sand to serve as a comparison control.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>In both simulants, the number of living, active tardigrades dropped sharply after four days. MGS-1 was particularly inhospitable \u2013 all of the Hypsibius tardigrades were dead within two days. Ramazzottius did somewhat better, but their numbers still declined.<\/p>\n<p>OUCM-1 was better, but still not great. Most of the populations declined sharply, with just one Ramazzottius group showing only minimal impact. Meanwhile, tardigrades in the sand chugged along, healthy and active.<\/p>\n<p>Theorizing that there was something in the MGS-1 sand that could be washed away, the researchers gave the simulant a rinse and tried again.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the experiment got interesting. The tardigrades placed in the washed simulant survived longer with activity levels similar to those seen in the Earth control.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/tardigrades-can-survive-high-velocity-impacts-after-being-fired-from-a-gun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientists Fired Tardigrades Out of a Gun to See if They Can Survive Space Impacts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems that there&#8217;s something very damaging in MGS-1 that can dissolve in water \u2013 maybe salts or some other compound,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/research\/story\/water-bears-reveal-potential-adapting-protecting-martian-resources\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bakermans says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was unexpected, but it&#8217;s good in a sense, because it means that the regolith&#8217;s defense mechanism could stop contaminants. At the same time, it can be washed to help support plant growth or prevent damage to humans who come in contact with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s more work to be done, of course. Whatever it is in MGS-1 that is so damaging to tardigrades remains to be isolated. The researchers ruled out possibilities such as pH and salinity, but toxic chemicals, reactive minerals, or superfine particles that impede tardigrade movements could still be factors.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also did not examine other properties of the Martian environment, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-tardigrade-discovery-reveals-secrets-of-radiation-resistance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">radiation<\/a>, atmospheric pressure, or temperature.
