{"id":327040,"date":"2026-03-03T17:57:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T17:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/327040\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T17:57:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T17:57:07","slug":"awards-for-cork-universitys-cancer-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/327040\/","title":{"rendered":"Awards for Cork university&#8217;s cancer researchers\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">University College Cork (UCC) researchers were recently honoured at the Irish Cancer Society Research Awards for their work to address the unmet needs of cancer survivors, including men with advanced genitourinary cancers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The event, hosted by the Irish Cancer Society\u2019s head of research Dr Claire Kilty, celebrates some of the work in cancer research being carried out by nominees around Ireland and funded by the Irish Cancer Society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Among those to claim top honours included Dr Brendan Noonan from Cork, who scooped the Survivorship Award, alongside Professor Jack Gleeson of cancer research at UCC and their team; Anita Cahill (advanced nurse practitioner, Cork University Hospital (CUH)), Steph Corkery (senior physiotherapist, CUH), and Katie Johnston (senior dietitian, CUH and UCC) for the Liam Mc Trial \u2014 a pioneering men\u2019s cancer survivorship programme which was codesigned with patient representatives, to address the unmet needs of cancer survivors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The project focuses on men with advanced genitourinary (prostate, bladder, and kidney) cancers, who are typically an underserved group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The CUH-based Liam Mc Trial sees men receive specialist nurse and dietician support weekly, as well as twice weekly physiotherapy sessions to empower them to maintain physical activity to enhance their quality of life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">This is complemented by access to social work and psychological supports to ensure their practical and emotional needs are also met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The two-year pilot initiative is the result of a \u20ac300,000 funding commitment awarded to UCC from the Irish Cancer Society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Also, Prof Gleeson received a commendation for Public and Patient Partnership (PPP), for the Improve TMZ study, which is an observational translational research study investigating why certain patients develop profound and prolonged low blood counts from their chemotherapy drug.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"University College Cork (UCC) researchers were recently honoured at the Irish Cancer Society Research Awards for their work&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":327041,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[79,103,61,60,24554],"class_list":["post-327040","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-cork-news","tag-health","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-ucc"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/327040","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=327040"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/327040\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/327041"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=327040"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=327040"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=327040"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
