Recalling her first reaction to the offer, Aruna said she was unsure whether audiences would accept her in a romantic track opposite Govinda.\u201cI told David ji, \u2018In every film, I am Govinda\u2019s mother. That image has become so strong. If I suddenly do this romantic, flirtatious role with him, people won\u2019t accept it. Please take someone else. I don\u2019t want to do it,\u2019\u201d she shared with Radio City.The actor admitted she was genuinely apprehensive about breaking that established image.<\/p>\n

David Dhawan insisted \u2014 and he was right<\/p>\n

However, David Dhawan was firm in his decision.\u201cHe said, \u2018No, Aruna ji, you will do it. And you\u2019ll see how much people will love it.\u2019\u201dThough hesitant, Aruna decided to trust the director\u2019s vision. \u201cI was scared, but I gave my best. Hats off to David ji\u2019s conception \u2014 he was absolutely right. People loved it,\u201d she said.The film, which also starred Karisma Kapoor, Pooja Batra and Sanjay Dutt, went on to become a cult comedy, with Aruna and Govinda\u2019s quirky romantic moments turning into one of its most memorable highlights.<\/p>\n

Talking about the transition from playing his mother to flirting with him on screen, Aruna said there were initial inhibitions.\u201cI would hesitate and think, what if people don\u2019t accept this? But Govinda would encourage me and say, \u2018Do it, it will look good.\u2019 I would rehearse and then perform. We used to laugh like mad on set,\u201d she recalled.She credited the team\u2019s support and Govinda\u2019s confidence for helping her overcome the discomfort. <\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t afford to wait for heroine roles\u201d<\/p>\n

Aruna also reflected on why she moved away from the conventional \u2018heroine\u2019 path early in her career.\u201cI had so many responsibilities. I couldn\u2019t sit and wait for a film to come so my house could run. In those days, you would do one film and that money would take care of two-three months. That\u2019s it,\u201d she said.With a large family to support, she chose to accept every role that came her way. \u201cThat\u2019s why no one thought of making Aruna Irani the heroine. They would say she does small roles, she plays the sister well. But I had to work.\u201d While there were moments of demotivation, she remains grateful. \u201cToday, I thank them. They made me who I am.
