A converted 1830s church in New York\u2019s Catskill Mountains has returned to the market for an asking price of $2.95 million<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Greek revival church, known as Potter Mountain House, is located on 37 wooded acres in Gilboa, in the foothills of the Catskills. It features a restored timber-frame chapel and intact steeple that presides over the home\u2019s pristine white siding and gently sloped metal roof.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 6,250-square-foot structure was restored and converted into a five-bedroom residence by ICDT studios, the architecture firm of homeowners Nik Vekic and Quinn Marquardt, who purchased the property in 2023 for $475,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we first walked through it we could see the original timber frame structure of the church and we both realized the potential of that,\u201d Vekic said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe became immediately enamored with it,\u201d Marquardt added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today, the sanctuary serves as the home\u2019s great room, with dramatic cathedral ceilings, the exposed hemlock beams and a new window wall that showcases mountain views. An annex \u2014added later\u2014includes five bedrooms, a secondary family room and a 625-bottle wine room, according to the listing with Annabel Taylor of Four Seasons Sotheby\u2019s International Realty. \u201cThe main great room is the show-stopping moment of that house,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The church was built in 1837 as the Manorkill Methodist Church. In the late 1990s, a new owner saved it from demolition and had it disassembled and relocated a few miles down the road to Gilboa, with the intention of converting it into a residence. The annex and garage portion were added in the early 2000s, but the project was abandoned midway and left vacant.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When Vekic and Marquardt came along, they found the additional structure a mess, the light into the chapel blocked and rotting pilasters and hemlock beams lying idle in the basement, they said. \u201cThe original wood beams which date back to 1837 were really beautiful and in really great shape but the previous owners had made a mess of the interiors,\u201d Vekic said. \u201cWe understood that the church needed to be gutted back to its original [state].\u201d<\/p>\n

One piece of the renovation was the conversion of the former bell tower into a library with 12-foot bookshelves and windows on all four sides that let in the light. \u201cI wanted to have a sense of enchantment and wonder when people walked into that living room and I thought the library was the best way to do that,\u201d Vekic said.<\/p>\n

The remainder of the home was also designed to feel integrated with the original church, despite the fact that it was all brand new. Each bathroom, for example, is unique and intentional, said Marquardt. \u201cWe tried to color drench each of the [bathrooms] to coordinate with the bedrooms they were closest to,\u201d he said. \u201cEach one has its own personality, color blocking and pizzazz.\u201d<\/p>\n

The completed property came to market in 2025 asking $3.85 million and the price was reduced several times before returning to market last week with Taylor.<\/p>\n

The grounds include multiple rivers, waterfalls, hiking trails and Catskill Mountain views. \u201cYou can walk for hours outside your front door,\u201d Taylor said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gilboa is a little more than an hour southwest of Albany, and Hudson Valley towns like Saugerties and Kingston are to the southeast.
