We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Chinese scientists have developed a polymer that converts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/heat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat<\/a> from its stretching into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/electricity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electricity<\/a>, an advance that could lead to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tech\/smartwatch-battery-wearables-health-fitness-b2122136.html\">self-powered smartwatches<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Peking University say the breakthrough material, which is like a rubber band, efficiently converts its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tech\/scientists-make-second-skin-material-that-sits-on-top-of-people-s-body-and-makes-them-look-young-a7020676.html\">elasticity<\/a> into electricity.<\/p>\n<p>It works on the principle of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tech\/battery-wearable-thermoelectric-generator-b1807373.html\">thermoelectricity<\/a> by which temperature differences generate power. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil now, all reported high-performance thermoelectric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/materials\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">materials<\/a> have realised only flexibility rather than elasticity,\u201d the researchers wrote in their study published in the journal Nature.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, wearable devices like smartwatches need batteries or frequent charging. <\/p>\n<p>The new material could provide a constant power supply without need for charging.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/General-view-of-a-Huawei-smartwatch.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A Huawei smartwatch\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/>A Huawei smartwatch (AFP via Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The new material capitalises on the difference in the body\u2019s temperature and that of the environment. The human body\u2019s temperature is around 37C while ambient temperature normally ranges from 20C to 30C. <\/p>\n<p>The Chinese researchers tried to harness this temperature difference and convert it into electricity with the new material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the first in the world to propose the concept of thermoelectric rubber,\u201d Peking University material scientist Lei Ting told the South China Morning Post.<\/p>\n<p>The innovation marks progress in the development of a new class of polymer that conducts electricity and maintains conductivity when under mechanical strain. Achieving elasticity while maintaining conductivity had proved elusive until this breakthrough. <\/p>\n<p>For their polymer, the scientists developed a hybrid structure by incorporating a nanofibre network into a polymeric material. The structure blends and cross-links semiconducting polymers with elastic rubber.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers demonstrated that the material could stretch to over 850 per cent of its original length. It could return to 90 per cent of its original shape when stretched to about 150 per cent its size.<\/p>\n<p>Adding special impurities to the material could boost its performance even further, the researchers noted. <\/p>\n<p>They showed the material could bend, stretch, and cling to skin. \u201cSuch thermal devices are comfortable to wear and efficiently convert the body\u2019s heat energy into electrical energy with less heat loss,\u201d Dr Ting said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese thermoelectric elastomers have the potential to make elastic thermoelectric generators in wearable applications much more conformable and efficient,\u201d the researchers wrote in their study.<\/p>\n<p>The applications might extend beyond consumer wearables.
