What does that mean for humanity&#8217;s return to the moon?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"e63c39e1-36ec-46d3-bd8c-44d76e8bdb96\">NASA has revealed a huge shakeup to its Artemis program of crewed moon exploration.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-cancels-artemis-3-astronaut-moon-landing-this-is-just-not-the-right-pathway-forward\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-cancels-artemis-3-astronaut-moon-landing-this-is-just-not-the-right-pathway-forward\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-cancels-artemis-3-astronaut-moon-landing-this-is-just-not-the-right-pathway-forward\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announcement<\/a> came last week, just after the agency&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 2<\/a> rocket was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-artemis-2-moon-rocket-returns-to-hangar-for-repairs-when-could-it-fly\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-artemis-2-moon-rocket-returns-to-hangar-for-repairs-when-could-it-fly\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-artemis-2-moon-rocket-returns-to-hangar-for-repairs-when-could-it-fly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rolled back to the hangar for repairs<\/a>. What was expected as an update to the timeline for Artemis 2&#8217;s mission ended up being an explanation of the restructuring of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a> itself.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"e63c39e1-36ec-46d3-bd8c-44d76e8bdb96-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The plan for Artemis 2 remains the same: Launch a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crew of four astronauts<\/a> on a 10-day journey around <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> and back to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> aboard NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion spacecraft<\/a>. With maintenance already underway, NASA is hoping the repairs to the Artemis 2 rocket can be made in time to meet a launch window that opens April 1. Until now, the mission had been billed as the precursor to an actual landing on the lunar surface on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 3<\/a> in 2028, but that is no longer the case. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> hasn&#8217;t changed its goal of returning astronauts to the moon in 2028, but Artemis 3 won&#8217;t be the mission to carry it out.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"9774a950-d8ea-4d45-83ac-a39a54596449\">Instead, that task will fall to Artemis 4, with Artemis 3 launching sooner with a different mission framework, and with a potential second crewed lunar landing on Artemis 5 in late 2028. The approach mirrors that of NASA&#8217;s early <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo program<\/a>, which launched incremental, quick-succession missions to test and prove the technologies necessary to safely land astronauts on the moon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t go right to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16758-apollo-11-first-moon-landing.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16758-apollo-11-first-moon-landing.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16758-apollo-11-first-moon-landing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo 11<\/a>,&#8221; said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman during a Feb. 27 press conference. &#8220;We had a whole <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24638-project-mercury.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24638-project-mercury.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24638-project-mercury.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercury program<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24655-project-gemini.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24655-project-gemini.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24655-project-gemini.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gemini<\/a> [and] lots of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo missions<\/a> before we ultimately landed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Artemis&#8217; architecture previously outlined a jump from Orion&#8217;s first uncrewed mission to the moon in 2022, a crewed lunar flyby on the upcoming Artemis 2 mission and a moon landing on Artemis 3 in 2028. But three or more years between missions, and a leap from lunar space to the lunar surface without at least one test-run with Orion and its landing vehicle left too many &#8220;firsts&#8221; for Artemis 3 to take on and posed a significant safety risk, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/y5brYjdkRv7pwGDVhjoqj5\/nasa-asap-2025-annual-report.pdf\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/y5brYjdkRv7pwGDVhjoqj5\/nasa-asap-2025-annual-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to a recent report<\/a> from the NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The numerous and unprecedented mission objectives \u2014 many being attempted for the first time within a single flight \u2014 result in a compounded level of technical and safety risk,&#8221; the ASAP report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, under its original design, the success of Artemis 3 depended on a lot of things going right. The mission&#8217;s moon lander, SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> spacecraft, is expected to need more than a dozen refueling flights in Earth orbit in order to complete its objectives of rendezvousing and docking with Orion in orbit around the moon, landing astronauts on the lunar surface and launching them back to orbit to rendezvous and dock again with Orion, which will safely ferry the astronauts home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:72.53%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cRdK2AgTyZoQudqb6vcJtF.png\" alt=\"an astronaut on the moon kneels on the right, a list is written on the left.\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cRdK2AgTyZoQudqb6vcJtF.png\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cRdK2AgTyZoQudqb6vcJtF.png\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>First-time Milestones for the Artemis III Mission prior to Feb. 27, 2025. (Image credit: NASA Aerospace Advisory Panel)<\/p>\n<p id=\"62d7c2c7-83c1-48b6-b3ec-2036a11bbb91\">Artemis 3&#8217;s success was not only dependent on all of those things going exactly right for the first time, but also on a number of operational milestones <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> has yet to demonstrate during Starship&#8217;s ongoing development. One such milestone is the ability to transfer and store large amounts of cryogenic propellant in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space<\/a>, which has never been done before.<\/p>\n<p>Now, NASA is breaking up those objectives between multiple missions. Artemis 3 will now launch in 2027, and will rendezvous with one or both of NASA&#8217;s contracted moon landers in Earth orbit. In addition to Starship, NASA has also tapped the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-origin-lunar-lander\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-origin-lunar-lander\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-origin-lunar-lander\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon lander<\/a> from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin<\/a> to support the Artemis program, and the space agency is eager to test out Orion with Starship, Blue Moon or both on next year&#8217;s Artemis 3 flight.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s challenging, it&#8217;s ambitious, but with this course correction, we are on a more stable foundation, and a more realistic path to the mountains we have ahead,&#8221; NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya said on Friday (Feb. 27).<\/p>\n<p>In the same way that Artemis 2 parallels the objectives of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17362-apollo-8.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17362-apollo-8.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17362-apollo-8.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo 8<\/a> to test out the crew capsule&#8217;s flight systems around the moon, Artemis 3&#8217;s mission to demonstrate rendezvous and docking with the lunar landers in Earth orbit, as well as testing out new spacesuits, is now closely aligned with Apollo 9.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Endeavoring for not just one, but TWO Moon landings in 2028. Apollo 8 launched on Dec. 21, 1968, and was followed less than three months later by Apollo 9 \u2014 a much quicker turnaround than Artemis&#8217; current wait time of three-plus years.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, NASA is backing away from some of the more complex design upgrades intended for Aretmis&#8217; rocket, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space Launch System<\/a> (SLS). SLS Block 1 was designed with the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) to launch the first three Artemis missions. Artemis 4 and the missions to follow were supposed to employ more powerful SLS variants \u2014 Block 1B, Block 2 and so forth \u2014 which feature an enhanced Exploration Upper Stage to launch heavier elements of the program, such as components for the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43018-lunar-orbital-platform-gateway.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43018-lunar-orbital-platform-gateway.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43018-lunar-orbital-platform-gateway.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gateway<\/a> space station planned for lunar orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Now, NASA is planning a more standardized SLS, with an upper stage solidified for its design rather than customized for each Artemis mission, and a new NASA graphic paints a picture of what that and other plans for Artemis&#8217; future might look like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:75.59%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P3BKqm3LkUa3jDfHNy2TMa.jpg\" alt=\"a rocket launches on the left while many spacecraft occupy the lunar surface and space on the right.\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P3BKqm3LkUa3jDfHNy2TMa.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P3BKqm3LkUa3jDfHNy2TMa.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>NASA Artemis program outline after restructure. (Image credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"2b1d09ec-ad55-4d2f-aa4e-730a467154ec\">An image released in concert with last week&#8217;s Artemis announcement illustrates NASA&#8217;s new vision for the program and humanity&#8217;s return to the moon, and has some details that may bring clarity to how that vision will unfold.<\/p>\n<p>The newly unveiled image is divided into three frames: Artemis 2, Artemis 3 and Artemis 4 and beyond. The Artemis 2 panel contains no surprises; it shows Orion&#8217;s launch on SLS, lunar flyby and return to Earth. Artemis 3 shows the mission&#8217;s new plan, with Orion still flying with ICPS, docking with both <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-moon-what-is-it-2026\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-moon-what-is-it-2026\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-moon-what-is-it-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon<\/a> above Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The image&#8217;s bottom panel \u2014 Artemis 4 and beyond \u2014 is the most interesting. It shows the standardized SLS Block 1 configuration launching alongside SpaceX&#8217;s Starship rocket and Blue Origin&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Glenn<\/a>. Orion is then seen flying next to both landers in space, still attached to its SLS upper stage, which is notably not the ICPS.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the spacecraft appears to be powered by a dual-engine Centaur vehicle, which is the upper stage for United Launch Alliance&#8217;s (ULA) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/vulcan-centaur-rocket\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/vulcan-centaur-rocket\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/vulcan-centaur-rocket\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vulcan rocket<\/a>. While NASA has not yet confirmed that it plans to outfit Centaur for SLS and Orion, doing so could make a lot of sense. The stage is nearly equal in diameter to Orion and its service module, has been proven reliable on all of ULA&#8217;s Vulcan missions to date, and doesn&#8217;t need to be designed from scratch to support the needs of future Artemis launches.<\/p>\n<p>Other significant inclusions in NASA&#8217;s illustration are seen on the lunar surface. Next to a handful of Starship and Blue Moon landers stands a robotic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/intuitive-machines\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/intuitive-machines\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/intuitive-machines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Intuitive Machines<\/a> lander \u2014 notably, the first commercial lander to touch down on the moon, which it did as a part of NASA&#8217;s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program in early 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Moon rovers bearing a striking resemblance to Astrolab&#8217;s FLEX lunar excursion vehicle are also seen scattered around the modules of a lunar base. Astrolab&#8217;s rover design is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-lunar-terrain-vehicle-artemis-moon-rover-contracts\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-lunar-terrain-vehicle-artemis-moon-rover-contracts\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-lunar-terrain-vehicle-artemis-moon-rover-contracts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of three<\/a> in the running for Artemis, along with rovers from Intuitive Machines and Lunar Outpost, neither of which appears to be included in NASA&#8217;s graphic.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Acknowledgement of shortcomings in the current Artemis plan is healthy &amp; a welcome change from past NASA leadership. It&#8217;s an ambitious undertaking for an increased launch cadence by the space agency, which has run into repeated delays over the course of the last 10 or so years leading up the program&#8217;s first crewed flight.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts aren&#8217;t sure the space agency can pull off the new plan in such a short amount of time, but still see the reorganization as a step in the right direction.
