{"id":329611,"date":"2026-03-05T04:12:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T04:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/329611\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T04:12:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T04:12:13","slug":"buoyant-labour-market-keeps-exchequer-finances-flowing-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/329611\/","title":{"rendered":"Buoyant labour market keeps exchequer finances flowing \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/income-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/income-tax\/\">income tax<\/a> receipts linked to having a record 2.83 million people at work boosted the Government\u2019s finances in January and February, latest figures show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Exchequer returns, published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-finance\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-finance\/\">Department of Finance<\/a>, show the Government collected \u20ac2.9 billion in income <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tax\/\">tax<\/a> last month, which was 10 per cent up on the equivalent month last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For January and February combined, income tax receipts totalled almost \u20ac6 billion, which was \u20ac305 million (5.4 per cent) in advance of last year\u2019s total at this stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The positive income tax trend reflects the current buoyancy of the labour market. The most recent Labour Force Survey indicated employment rose to a record 2.83 million in the final quarter of last year while unemployment remained near a historic low of 4.6 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest exchequer numbers indicate the Government collected tax revenues (across all categories) of \u20ac13.6 billion in the first two months of the year, which was 10.4 per cent down on last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, when once-off receipts arising from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple-tax\/\">Apple tax ruling<\/a> are excluded from the 2025 figures, total tax receipts this year were up by 1.1 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Corporation tax receipts, which hit a record \u20ac31 billion last year, generated \u20ac863 million so far this year, which was down 22 per cent on the corresponding period last year, but January and February are not considered significant months for the business tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vat\/\">VAT<\/a> receipts for the period generated \u20ac4.7 billion, up 4 per cent year on year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFebruary is typically a quiet month for tax revenues, but the growth in income tax is a positive reflection of the strength of our economy,\u201d Minister for Finance Simon Harris said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe March returns, which will include the first significant month of the year for corporation tax payments, will provide a better insight into the performance of the public finances,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is a time of unprecedented global uncertainty, and it is more important than ever that we continue to reinforce our economic resilience by running surpluses, making transfers into the two funds, and keeping public spending under control as set out in our Medium Term Fiscal and Structural Plan,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department said the exchequer recorded a deficit of \u20ac1.8 billion for February.
