{"id":330707,"date":"2026-03-05T18:55:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T18:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/330707\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T18:55:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T18:55:07","slug":"laghey-driver-fined-for-insurance-offence-after-brother-missed-a-lift-to-debs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/330707\/","title":{"rendered":"Laghey driver fined for insurance offence after brother \u2018missed a lift\u2019 to Debs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Laghey resident was convicted and fined \u20ac250 for being the driver of an uninsured vehicle, after Donegal District Court was told his brother had missed a lift to a Debs function he was due to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Edward John Britton, 25, of Boat House, Mullinvale, Laghey, Donegal, was convicted after being found on July 23, 2025, at the N15 at Laghey, Donegal, of being the user of a vehicle without an approved policy of insurance as required by Part VI of the Road Traffic Act, 1968, as amended.<\/p>\n<p>It was found he was contrary to Section 56 (1)&amp;(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1961, as amended by Section 18 of the Road Traffic Act 2006.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Britton\u2019s solicitor, Francis Gillespie, said at Ballyshannon Courthouse: \u201cThe vehicle in question had broken down approximately 16 months previously.<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.donegallive.ie\/section\/2479\/crime-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Crime &amp; Court<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the night, his brother had been due to attend a Debs function, and he missed his lift.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy client is 25 years old and is a single man. His line of work is approximately 10km away, and he needs his licence to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that Britton had no previous convictions.<\/p>\n<p>Judge \u00c9ite\u00e1in Cunningham, convicted Britton and fined him \u20ac250 with four months to pay.
