{"id":331588,"date":"2026-03-06T06:51:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T06:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/331588\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T06:51:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T06:51:17","slug":"americans-are-woefully-short-on-saving-for-retirement-warren-buffetts-investing-advice-could-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/331588\/","title":{"rendered":"Americans are woefully short on saving for retirement\u2014Warren Buffett\u2019s investing advice could help"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Larry Fink, CEO of the world\u2019s largest asset management firm, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/blackrock\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/blackrock\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BlackRock<\/a>, has <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/17\/blackrock-ceo-larry-fink-warns-no-americans-are-close-to-what-they-need-to-retire\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/17\/blackrock-ceo-larry-fink-warns-no-americans-are-close-to-what-they-need-to-retire\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">been on Americans\u2019 case<\/a> about not saving enough for retirement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a 2025 shareholder letter, he warned \u201calmost no one is close\u201d to the amount they need to save for retirement. BlackRock, which has $14 trillion in assets under management, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.blackrock.com\/us\/individual\/literature\/publication\/retirement-survey-february-2026.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackrock.com\/us\/individual\/literature\/publication\/retirement-survey-february-2026.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">surveyed<\/a> 1,000 registered voters, asking how much they\u2019d need to retire comfortably, and the average response was roughly $2.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a lot,\u201d Fink wrote. \u201cMore than I was expecting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s far more than Americans have actually saved for retirement. BlackRock\u2019s survey showed 62% of Americans had less than $150,000 saved for retirement\u2014only 7% of what they think they need to retire comfortably.<\/p>\n<p>But if Americans had listened to the likes of Fink and legendary investor Warren Buffett, they could be in better shape to migrate to Florida, hit the links, and enjoy uninterrupted time with their grandkids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Buffett\u2019s primary rule for saving for retirement is to invest for the long term and allow compound interest (interest earned on interest) power your portfolio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest,\u201d Buffett wrote in his <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.givingpledge.org\/pledger\/warren-buffett\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.givingpledge.org\/pledger\/warren-buffett\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giving Pledge letter<\/a> in 2010. Buffett, along with Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates started the Giving Pledge, encouraging billionaires and other ultra-high-net-worth individuals to give away the vast majority of their wealth during their lifetime or upon their death.<\/p>\n<p>The former <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/berkshire-hathaway\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/berkshire-hathaway\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Berkshire Hathaway<\/a> CEO, who retired at the end of 2025, often uses a snowball analogy to illustrate how compound interest does much of the work for investors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife is like a snowball,\u201d Buffett <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bill_stone\/2024\/08\/25\/warren-buffetts-secret-formula-for-wealth-creation\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bill_stone\/2024\/08\/25\/warren-buffetts-secret-formula-for-wealth-creation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has said<\/a>, according to his authorized autobiography, The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life. \u201cThe important thing is finding wet snow and a really long hill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Invest and stay the course<\/p>\n<p>Nothing better showcases the power of compound interest than Buffett himself. The 95-year-old, who still lives in a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/12\/warren-buffett-accumulating-money-doesnt-achieve-greatness-still-lives-modest-nebraska-home-clipped-coupons\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/12\/warren-buffett-accumulating-money-doesnt-achieve-greatness-still-lives-modest-nebraska-home-clipped-coupons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$31,000 Nebraska home<\/a> despite having a net worth of nearly $150 billion, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/05\/03\/most-of-warren-buffetts-wealth-came-after-age-65-heres-why.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/05\/03\/most-of-warren-buffetts-wealth-came-after-age-65-heres-why.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> he accumulated most of his wealth after the age of 65, when the power of compound interest kicked into high gear.<\/p>\n<p>In his formula for wealth creation, Buffett stays invested in productive assets and doesn\u2019t sell when stocks appear volatile in the short term.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while Buffett insists his strategy works, America\u2019s economy doesn\u2019t always reward the people who most deserve it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy luck was accentuated by my living in a market system that sometimes produces distorted results, though overall it serves our country well,\u201d Buffett wrote in his Giving Pledge letter. \u201cI\u2019ve worked in an economy that rewards someone who saves the lives of others on a battlefield with a medal, rewards a great teacher with thank-you notes from parents, but rewards those who can detect the mispricing of securities with sums reaching into the billions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn short, fate\u2019s distribution of long straws is wildly capricious,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But part of financial success is knowing how to plan for the long term, which isn\u2019t widely taught or understood by Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost financial advisors recommend workers start saving for retirement as soon as they enter the workforce,\u201d according to a February <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nirsonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/NIRS_2026-Retirement-in-America-FINAL.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nirsonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/NIRS_2026-Retirement-in-America-FINAL.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> by the National Institute on Retirement Security. \u201cHowever, the reality of preparing for retirement often differs from the expectations of workers or the overly optimistic financial projections of advisors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fink has also long <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/05\/union-leaders-larry-fink-retirement-crisis-facing-americans-truth-failure-401k-revolution\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/05\/union-leaders-larry-fink-retirement-crisis-facing-americans-truth-failure-401k-revolution\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warned<\/a> about America\u2019s retirement crisis, with one of his other main arguments being the security system will fail because <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/29\/nx-s1-5689902\/us-life-expectancy-rises\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/29\/nx-s1-5689902\/us-life-expectancy-rises\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">life expectancy is rising<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem will only get harder and nastier as the oldest Gen-Xers start to retire,\u201d Fink argued. \u201cThey\u2019re the first generation primarily dependent on 401(k)s.
