A new exhibition by Pablo Picasso is opening in Manchester next week, featuring never-before-seen works on public display. The Picasso: A Legacy exhibition<\/a>, located in Castle Fine Art gallery on Manchester\u2019s King Street, will include over 35 original works on paper and ceramics created by the artist from the mid 1930\u2019s to his death in 1973.<\/p>\n

Running from Monday 9th March until Monday 4th May at the Manchester gallery<\/a>, The Picasso: A Legacy exhibition is free<\/a>\u00a0to visit and open daily. Visitors will be guided through the last four decades of Picasso\u2019s life, encountering the artist\u2019s lovers and muses, mythological alter egos, playful zoomorphic ceramics, and feats of frantic artistic output in Picasso\u2019s final decade.<\/p>\n

\nWhat to expect at the Picasso: A Legacy exhibition in Manchester
\nPortfolios, books, and ceramics<\/p>\n

Featured in the exhibition are individual editions, as well as complete portfolios and books such as Nature morte aux poires et au pichet (c. 1960) and La Guerre et la paix (1954). The ceramics on display will include Joueur de fl\u00fbte (1951) and Yan soleil (1963). These whimsical experiments in three dimensions are part of a wider selection, which encompasses the years 1948 to 1968, made while Picasso was living in the south of France.<\/p>\n

\nMythical creatures<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Picasso repeatedly turned to a cast of mythical creatures, archetypes, and characters as symbolic representations of himself. The exhibition will examine how minotaurs, fauns, bulls, matadors, and owls populated his work, serving as alter egos through which he could express the powerful impulses of desire, passion, vitality, and mortality.<\/p>\n

Muses<\/p>\n

The final theme of the Manchester exhibition explores Picasso\u2019s muses, who shaped the trajectory of his art and fueled his creative energy. Femme Endormie (Dormeuse) (1962\/63) featuring Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Walter and Te\u0302te de jeune fille 1(1945) featuring Franc\u0327oise Gilot are amongst the portraits exhibited. These women provided Picasso with the creative impetus that continually reshaped his ever-evolving approach to form and medium, while at the same time are interwoven with Picasso\u2019s own self-image.<\/p>\n
