LOS ANGELES, March 7 \u2014 Oscar nominee Timothee Chalamet is the frontrunner to take home the golden statuette for Marty Supreme\u2014but he definitely has not won fans in the ballet and opera worlds.<\/p>\n
In a town hall discussion late last month with Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey hosted by CNN and Variety, the 30-year-old Chalamet was discussing the future of movie theaters and whether the advent of streaming will spell doom for cinemas.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf people want to see it\u2014like Barbie, like Oppenheimer\u2014they\u2019re going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it,\u201d Chalamet said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I don\u2019t want to be working in ballet or opera or things where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.\u2019 All respect to the ballet and opera people out there,\u201d he added, to laughs from the audience.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just took shots for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n
The world\u2019s opera and ballet companies were not entertained.<\/p>\n
In the French American actor\u2019s native New York, the Metropolitan Opera posted a backstage video with his quote plastered across it and the caption: \u201cThis one\u2019s for you, @tchalamet…\u201d<\/p>\n
The Paris Opera riffed on Marty Supreme, in which Chalamet plays a 1950s table tennis player with big dreams.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlot twist, there is ping-pong in opera too,\u201d it said on Instagram, with a video clip from Nixon in China, now playing in the French capital.<\/p>\n
The Vienna State Opera shouted out to Chalamet: \u201cConsider this your personal invitation to Vienna. Our stage is waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n
And in London, the English National Ballet posted yesterday: \u201cDear any celebs that believe no one cares about ballet or opera… We\u2019re happy to report that ballet is not only alive and well, but thriving.\u201d \u2014 AFP<\/p>\n
