The idea of a ‘culture card’ for young people in Ireland has been a topic of conversation on and off for over a year, after being mentioned in the Programme for Government.<\/p>\n
A culture card programme would see young Irish citizens given money to spend on cultural and sporting activities, in a bid to make these more accessible.<\/p>\n
Other European countries like France, Spain and Italy have versions of culture cards already, ranging in value from \u20ac300-\u20ac500.<\/p>\n
Last month, Fianna F\u00e1il TD Peter \u2018Chap\u2019 Cleere shared a video to his social media accounts outlining his party\u2019s vision for culture cards.<\/p>\n
In the video, which featured him pretending to DJ, he said the plan would see a \u20ac100 culture card being given to Irish citizens on their 18th birthday.<\/p>\n
A Department of Culture spokesperson told RT\u00c9 News that “the Minister proposes to examine the introduction of a Youth Culture Card and its potential to enhance interest in the arts among young people for 16 and 17-year-olds to access theatre, music and art events”.<\/p>\n
The department is now in “preliminary stages of reaching out to potential stakeholders and partners” in relation to the scheme.<\/p>\n
