Former president Mary Robinson<\/a> has accused Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> US administration of \u201cflooding the atmosphere with lies\u201d. <\/p>\n

She was speaking at an International Women\u2019s Day<\/a> rally in Belfast<\/a>, at which there were loud cheers for a number of speakers who called for an end to the conflict in Iran<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an administration in the United States which is flooding the atmosphere with lies, not to be believed, but to confuse, to confuse that there is no truth,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cTruth is our relations with each other … we must flourish together.\u201d <\/p>\n

Robinson spoke at the rally alongside Iranian human rights activist and academic Azadeh Sobout, Helen Crickard from Reclaim the Agenda and Aoife Nic An Tuile from Youth Action.<\/p>\n

She condemned the \u201cepidemic of violence against women and girls\u201d on this island and across the globe, and criticised spending on wars at a time when international aid contributions are falling.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we have this war by Israel and the United States on Iran which has opened up such devastation in the Middle East,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are seeing the undermining of the rule of law which is very worrying for our world because it\u2019s a rule by power and we must counter that, so we have a lot of issues that require exactly the theme of this International Women\u2019s Day here in Belfast is, strength in solidarity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to grow that solidarity and grow it in ways that strengthen it in order to counter a very severe range of backlashes against rights now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former UN high commissioner for human rights also condemned the \u201cmisogyny of social media for every woman who stands up, or even if they don\u2019t stand up\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an extraordinarily dark part of social media now, and getting worse because AI is enabling the denuding of women and girls, the ways in which it\u2019s possible to literally try to destroy people\u2019s lives through attacks on social media,\u201d she said. \u201cAll of this needs the strength in solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sobout called for democracy in Iran, which she said is coming \u201cunder bombardment\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stand before you as an Iranian woman who opposes the men who rule my country today, the theocratic regime that answered demands for dignity and freedom with massacre, and the men who ruled it before, a monarchy sustained by foreign intelligence and imperial power,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is little space for people like me in the political script written about Iran because we are told that we must choose, between dictatorship and bombardment, between oppression and destruction, submission and annihilation, we reject that choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nic An Tuile urged unity and solidarity to work to prevent violence against women and girls.<\/p>\n

\u201cViolence against women affects everyone we know, our mothers, our grandmothers, our sisters, our friends and our girlfriends,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe north of Ireland is the most dangerous place in Europe to be a woman, but no more, it\u2019s time to stand up united.
