{"id":334981,"date":"2026-03-08T06:50:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T06:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/334981\/"},"modified":"2026-03-08T06:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T06:50:09","slug":"breaking-limerick-man-charged-at-special-court-over-seizure-of-significant-six-figure-sum-of-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/334981\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Limerick man charged at special court over seizure of \u2018significant six-figure sum\u2019 of drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LIMERICK man has appeared before a special court sitting in Newcastle West this Saturday in connection with the seizure of \u20ac100,000 worth of cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Calvert, aged 26, with an address at Stenson Park, Farranshone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/limerickleader.ie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick<\/a> city was charged with possession of drugs, and with possession of drugs for sale or supply, both contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act.<\/p>\n<p>It is alleged that garda\u00ed from the Divisional Drugs Unit, based at Henry Street garda station, carried out a search of a vehicle in Limerick city on Thursday, March 5 at approximately 6.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Garda Eoin Sheahan gave evidence of arresting, charging and cautioning Mr Calvert at Henry Street garda station on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made no reply to either charge,\u201d said Det Garda Sheahan.<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/crime-and-courts\/2030379\/couple-refuse-to-move-caravan-from-public-road-in-the-city-centre.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Couple refuse to move caravan from public road in the city centre<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inspector Gearoid Thompson, prosecuting on behalf of the State, said there was no objection to bail being granted subject to a number of conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions include signing on daily at a garda station; obey a curfew between 10pm and 7am; not to apply for a passport; not to commit any offences and be of good behaviour; reside at an address in Stenson Park, Farranshone; and provide a mobile phone number to gardai.<\/p>\n<p>Insp Thompson said the allegation is a \u201csignificant six-figure sum\u201d and it is being considered by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).<\/p>\n<p>Tom Kiely, solicitor for Mr Calvert during the brief procedural matter, applied for free legal aid on behalf of his client.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is not working,\u201d said Mr Kiely.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Carol Anne Coolican, presiding, granted the legal aid application.
