Netflix<\/a>\u00a0have released the trailer for their new documentary about\u00a0Red Hot Chili Peppers <\/a>founding guitarist Hillel Slovak.<\/p>\n

The Rise\u00a0Of\u00a0The\u00a0Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel\u00a0is getting its world premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas on Friday (March 13), while it is set to arrive on the streaming service on March 20.<\/p>\n

It will focus on Slovak, the founding guitarist of the group who played on their first three studio albums before dying from a drug overdose in 1988 at the age of 26. He went on to be replaced by John Frusciante.<\/p>\n

The doc has been directed by Ben Feldman, it will delve into the band\u2019s \u201cgritty formative years\u201d\u00a0and it features interviews with Anthony Kiedis, Flea and Frusciante, as well as friends of Slovak.<\/p>\n

Despite members of the band being interviewed for the film,\u00a0they have gone out of their way to distance themselves from the project<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout a year ago, we were asked to be interviewed for a documentary about Hillel Slovak,\u201d they said in a statement. \u201cHe was a founding member of the group, a great guitarist, and friend. We agreed to be interviewed out of love and respect for Hillel and his memory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, this documentary is now being advertised as a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary, which it is not,\u201d they clarified. \u201cWe had nothing to do with it creatively. We have yet to make a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe central subject of this current Netflix special is Hillel\u00a0Slovak\u00a0and we hope it sparks interest in his work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in 2022, the band\u00a0spoke to\u00a0NME\u00a0in an exclusive cover interview<\/a>\u00a0about Slovak\u2019s impact ahead of what would have been his 60th birthday. Kiedis said: \u201cThe energy of Hillel Slovak has never truly faded.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish Hillel\u00a0hadn\u2019t\u00a0missed out on\u00a0that first recording [self-titled debut \u2018The\u00a0Red Hot\u00a0Chili Peppers\u2019] in the first year,\u201d he added. \u201cWe did some TV shows in\u00a01984\u00a0and I look at them now and think: \u2018Damn, I wish Hillel would have been there for that. He was\u00a0a creator\u00a0of the band. That was his baby.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyway, it was meant to be the way it was meant to be and it all fleshed out the way life goes\u2026 But Hillel\u2019s still there in our hearts, whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a030, 40, 50, 60 or even 100 [years].\u201d<\/p>\n

Red Hot Chili Peppers released their last material in 2022, after they\u00a0welcomed guitarist Frusciante back into the line-up in 2019<\/a>. They released two albums that year,\u00a0\u2018Unlimited Love\u2019\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0\u2018Return Of The Dream Canteen\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere,\u00a0Flea released a soulful jazz cover of Frank Ocean\u2019s \u2018Thinkin Bout You\u2019 last month<\/a>\u00a0ahead of a new solo album, while\u00a0drummer Chad Smith\u00a0recently\u00a0showed up as a substitute\u00a0music teacher<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Netflix\u00a0have released the trailer for their new documentary about\u00a0Red Hot Chili Peppers founding guitarist Hillel Slovak.
