{"id":336116,"date":"2026-03-09T00:55:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T00:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/336116\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T00:55:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T00:55:08","slug":"ireland-qualify-for-hockey-world-cup-after-winning-penalty-shootout-against-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/336116\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland qualify for Hockey World Cup after winning penalty shootout against Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                    Ireland 0<br \/>\nJapan 0<\/p>\n<p>Ireland win 3-1 after penalty shootout<\/p>\n<p>THE IRELAND WOMEN\u2019S Hockey team held their nerve in a penalty shootout to beat Japan and book their place at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The result caps a superb few days for Irish hockey after the men\u2019s team also secured World Cup qualification following their 4-0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the42.ie\/ireland-men-qualify-hockey-world-cup-6977938-Mar2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">win over Wales.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After losing out to Australia, Ireland went into this third-place play off at a qualifying tournament in Chile with a ticket to the World Cup on the line.<\/p>\n<p>The game against Japan remained scoreless after 70 minutes with a shootout needed to determine a winner.<\/p>\n<p>Goalkeeper Elizabeth Murphy produced another brilliant performance for Ireland, while Sarah Hawkshaw, Hannah McLoughlin, and Jessica McMaster also impressed.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland and Japan both scored their opening attempts in the shootout while Hannah McLoughlin scored Ireland\u2019s second and Elizabeth Murphy denied Japan\u2019s second effort.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Kealy was then denied for Ireland before Murphy intervened again with another vital save.
