(Photo by CARLOS JASSO \/ AFP) (Photo by CARLOS JASSO\/AFP via Getty Images)          \" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/0_BRITAIN-POLITICS.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves(Image: CARLOS JASSO, AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">During Tuesday&#8217;s spring statement, Chancellor Rachel Reeves <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/spring-forecast-2026-speech\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">told the Commons<\/a>: \u201cBy the next election, after accounting for inflation, people are forecast to be \u00a31,000 a year better off per year.\u201d But with household bills rising, tax thresholds frozen and unemployment on the up, many can\u2019t afford to wait for the economy to catch up, according to one financial expert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.totallymoney.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">TotallyMoney<\/a> CEO Alastair Douglas is urging people to take matters into their own hands by making a few quick changes to their finances.<\/p>\n<p>Financial expert&#8217;s tips to save \u00a34,000Save \u00a31,931 by transferring your credit card balance<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Douglas took what he said was an average example to illustrate his first point in relation to credit cards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said: \u201cHalf of people are currently paying interest on their monthly credit card balance and could save hundreds, if not thousands, by using a balance transfer. You can currently get up to 38 months interest-free, and on the average balance of \u00a33,002 that\u2019s a saving of \u00a31,931.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This example was based on the average TotallyMoney customer&#8217;s interest-bearing balance of \u00a33,002 moving to the market-leading TSB 38-month offer with a 3.49% fee; 47.8% of credit card balances bear interest, according to <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ukfinance.org.uk\/system\/files\/2026-02\/Card%20Spending%20Update%20-%20November%202025.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">UK Finance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Switch energy providers and save \u00a3917<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Douglas said: \u201cSwitching energy providers is easy and you could save up to \u00a3917. Use a comparison site and consider smaller or newer providers as they may offer better deals. You&#8217;ll usually need to jump through a few hoops to secure the cash \u2013 and these often include moving Direct Debits, depositing cash, and logging into the banking app. Using the Current Account Switch Service means your balance, regular payments and income will be automatically transferred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shift your savings to earn an extra \u00a3651<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Douglas said: \u201cThe Big Five high street banks pay little more than 1% on their easy access savings accounts, meaning you\u2019re not only earning very little in interest, but that your spending power is weakening with inflation at 3.00%.
