{"id":336972,"date":"2026-03-09T13:35:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/336972\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T13:35:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:35:07","slug":"gerry-adams-arrives-at-high-court-for-bombings-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/336972\/","title":{"rendered":"Gerry Adams arrives at High Court for bombings trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gerry Adams has arrived at the High Court in London for the start of a civil trial in claims brought by three men injured in Provisional IRA bombings.<\/p>\n<p>John Clark, a victim of the 1973 Old Bailey bombing in London, Jonathan Ganesh, a 1996 London Docklands bombing victim, and Barry Laycock, a victim of the 1996 Arndale shopping centre bombing in Manchester, all allege that Adams was a leading member of the Provisional IRA on those dates, including of its Army Council.<\/p>\n<p>The trio are bringing legal action against the former Sinn F\u00e9in president and are seeking just \u00a31 in damages.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"426\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gerry-adams-arrives-at-high-court-for-bombings-trial.jpg\" alt=\"Gerry Adams arriving at the Royal Courts of Justice\" data-title=\"Gerry Adams civil court case\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"James Manning\" data-usage-terms=\"\"\/>Adams denies that he had any role in the Provisional IRA (James Manning\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>They claim Adams \u201cacted together with others in furtherance of a common design to bomb the British mainland\u201d and was \u201cdirectly responsible\u201d in various roles within the Provisional IRA for decisions made to place devices in 1973 and 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Adams denies that he had any role in the Provisional IRA and is opposing the claim.<\/p>\n<p>He arrived at the High Court in London on Monday morning for the first day of the trial which is expected to end next week.<\/p>\n<p>Adams was driven into the car park of the Royal Courts of Justice, wearing a grey waistcoat and red patterned tie, arriving shortly before 9:40am.<\/p>\n<p>The 77-year-old is expected to give evidence in the claims on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for the three bombing victims told a previous hearing that Mr Adams should be considered a representative of a class of people who \u201cwere members of the Provisional IRA\/its Army Council between 1973 and 1996\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The men also wanted to sue the Provisional IRA but Mr Justice Soole said that claim must be struck out because it is \u201cnot a legal entity\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Gerry Adams has arrived at the High Court in London for the start of a civil trial in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":336973,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[42,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":["post-336972","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/336972","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=336972"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/336972\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/336973"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=336972"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=336972"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=336972"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
