{"id":337684,"date":"2026-03-09T22:37:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T22:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/337684\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T22:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T22:37:07","slug":"elderly-man-who-tends-to-his-familys-graves-given-10-year-driving-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/337684\/","title":{"rendered":"Elderly man who tends to his family&#8217;s graves given 10-year driving ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN ELDERLY man who had his car seized by garda\u00ed has appeared before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick<\/a> District City Court.<\/p>\n<p>Clement Sarsfield, 70, with an address at Elton Court, Meelick, county Clare was found driving without a licence, a NCT, or insurance at the Knockalissheen Road Ballynanty Beg, county Limerick.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecuting Inspector Liam Wallace detailed that Mr Sarsfield\u2019s car was seized by garda\u00ed under the Road Traffic Act.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/crime-and-courts\/2030260\/new-plan-announces-more-gardai-on-the-city-streets-in-limerick.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New plan announces more garda\u00ed on the city streets in Limerick<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The court heard that Mr Sarsfield has 14 previous convictions &#8211; all of which are for road traffic matters. His previous convictions include two for no insurance, a dangerous driving offence, and two convictions for driving without a licence.<\/p>\n<p>Solicitor Sarah Ryan, representing the man, said that \u201chis wife and daughter died within 17 days of each other\u201d, and that \u201cthe only thing that kept him going was tending to the graves\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The solicitor said \u201ceverything came on top of him\u201d, following the loss of his wife and daughter. She further detailed that the man now has a bus pass which he will use from now on.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ryan said that Mr Sarsfield has \u201cmedical issues\u201d, and has a doctor\u2019s report outlining details.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Patricia Harney said: \u201cThe only question is whether or not he will go to prison\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Harney disqualified Mr Sarsfield from driving for 10 years for driving without insurance.<\/p>\n<p>She convicted and sentenced the man to eight weeks\u2019 imprisonment, which was suspended for 18 months.
